I live in California, which I know is not quite as hot as Florida but can reach 90 and even 100 degree weather. My silkies have been fine. When it gets hot, provide more shade, turn the sprinkler on, and provide lots of drinkable water and they should be mostly fine.
Would you consider them difficult to care for and fragile birds? I figure all the smaller birds are more fragile..How hard is it to keep the white ones clean? Thanks so much for the photos!
Hmm... there are two ways to answer this.
They are not very difficult and are in fact one of the best amateur birds to start out with. They will need a little bit of extra care, like every-other-month baths, but other thanb that they are quite easy to take care of.
Now, here is the slight con of having silkies. Sometimes, very, very, very, rarely, a silkie can get sick or even die for no reason. While this is rare and probably won't happen (at least for your first two years), if you raise silkies for a while it will inevitably happen.
However, don't let that discourage you. They really are a joy to have, and their slight bit of neediness is more than made up for by their personalities and fur-thers.
