I like the reds too! I have only black so far...so I guess I like all colors...LOL

I may have some buff cochins in my hatch...I love their color too!! I candled today and I have 13 eggs I could see the embryos bouncing around...another 4 that are developing well but couldn't see movement yet! So excited!!!!

We're newbies and are researching breeds while we build the coop and run. Do cochins and bantam cochins do well in a mixed flock? We're thinking about 2 bantam cochins, 2 brahma cochins, 1 wyandotte, and 2 swedish flower chickens. Since it's only the 2 of us, we want low egg production, but friendly, pet-like chickens.

I have ten bantams in a brooder with 19 big chicks. They get stepped on once a or twice a day, but they don't seem to be picked on...

I have mine separate for breeding purposes, and their protection from flying predators...the hawks haven't ever offered to fly off with one of my big hens...but the bantys would be too much of a temptation I think...

My Dad runs a mixed flock, from serama (they're smaller than bantys) to naked necks and turkens! Chickens will be chickens, you never now how they'll behave till you get them...they set their own pecking order and we just provide the food and water.... Lol

The one with her face by the wall is a buff, I also have two blues, a black and a partridge.

sorry if this is the wrong place to post I am just starting out with chickens, but I was given a bantam chick not sure of sex or age, at cal ranch it was by itself and looked about ready to kick the bucket, we took it home with the regular chicks we had bought and and she seemed a little happier and is doing better now it isn't alone. but she is being quite noisy and I am wondering if I should look for someone that has other bantams to give her too now she is doing better.

As they are very young chicks and we are a cold climate they are in a big plastic feed tub with pine shavings and a heat lamp still, it is in with a duckling and 5 Orpington chicks and they tolerate it but don't want to let her cuddle up with them. right now she is yellow and working on feathers instead of down

as I am not familiar with the bantams and hadn't really planned on getting them need some advice here on what would be best for the bantam chick, at least it didn't die.

There isn't much difference in care...none that I can think of...if her bottom is clean, she is eating and drinking and the others aren't picking on her she should be fine.

Are they all huddled under the lamp? They need to be kept at 95 degrees for the first week, lowering the temp by 5 degrees each week till 75...

Is there enough space that they can get out of the light if they feel too warm?

I have 10 bantys in with 19 regulars, they get loud when the water or food needs filled...

seems they have lots of room at this point, waiting for the picture to get to my email.

as the chicks were bought a day apart we did add a divider into the feed tub because the duckling is overly protective of the smaller chicks that were bought with her, and the bantam and the older chicks we got the next day seemed to try to pick on the duckling

they all seem to get along until it comes to the water even adding several dishes in there for them, they are on starter feed and are doing pretty good when light is out at night as they are inside about quieting down and getting some sleep lol

duckling is making sure all their bums are clean being very motherly in the absence of older chickens

and thanks for the welcome, we are planning on free ranging the chicks when they get old enough to go outside , thinking of looking for some older chickens , to help kind of watch out for them when they go outside. theres some wild ducks out in the pasture and they do fine with the boxer that watches over the few animals there
