I just recieved my assorted Bantams from mypetchickens.com. I recieved a Polish, leghorn, Japanese Buff, Black Silkie and Japanese gray. I have a couple questions though, my Silkie is only baring weight on one leg. She is eating and drinking but refuses o use her right leg. I think her joint is a little swollen and she pants every so often. What should i do?

2nd Question.

They are not vaccinated and I havent started them on medicated feed, just regular. When should I have them vaccinated?

Thanks I will include pics later.

Hold the chick upside down and see if she kicks it like the other one.

Can you get a picture?

Keep it hydrated.

The chick is kicking but now she is not drinking enough water. I've tried dipping her beak in gently but she only drinks for a second her droppings are looking more and more dry. I will have pics up when I get my camera out of my wifes purse. It seems to always make its way back in their.

Here are the pics. She is doing well except for the limp

I had a splint for the first day but she was not keeping up with the others. Now she hops around with them... On a side not my wife hates any type of bird and was not happy about the idea. That changed quickly, she goes out and checks on them as much as me and she has named them.

I had a chick that had foot issues...wife named it so I didn't cull it...now as a pullet there is no issue. Don't vaccinate. Not a problem with smalll flocks and really only done as really new chicks. It takes a couple days for chicks to figure out the whole drinking and eating issue. You might try putting some electrolytes in the water if you want to be on the safe side.

Big debate on the medicated verses nonmedicated feed thing...I ain't going there...I feed medicated. The main thing is to make sure it is a chick formula.

Have fun and welcome to the fray! So when are you getting more birds? Yes you will.

Hahaha.. more. I am limited by my backyard space.

Thanks for all the pointers. I cant stop watching them. They are great.

Be interesting to see how your Japanese grey turns out. Like several of mine from MPC it appears to be mottled rather than a true grey. Of my 10 grey chicks only one is showing any sign of having the correct grey markings, the rest are solid coal black or mottles.
