If anyone has suggestions/advice for this chicken noob, please let me know....

long story short, is my EE banty hen fell between a concrete/stucco wall and the plywood back of the new coop. I didn't know where she was, and was looking all over for several hours. I feel awful!

I had to use a circular saw to cut the back wall of the coop out to get to her....DH is probably gonna kill me

So once I got her out, she was very floppy and had drooping feathers....legs kept stretching out behind her. I brought her inside and gave her some water with gatorade via syringe. (not a lot, just a few CCs or so a couple of times.) She started perking up a little, opening her eyes and 'talking' like she normally does a little. I held her upright in a towel on my lap for several hours while she rested. I couldn't seem to prop her up unless I held her - she would fall forward on her face and just lay there unless I held her in position.

She is now much more alert, has drank a little water on her own, had some mash and then some mash mixed with crumbles and scratch. She also laid a shell-less egg in my lap (eew). She's starting to preen a little and can now stand, but can't seem to walk or move her legs. If she does she flops over on her side and has a hard time righting herself.

When standing, her right wing droops to the ground. She looks down at her feet and wing like she's confused and pecks at them a little. She is now able to stand for quite a while, and has dozed off a little without falling.

I can't feel any obvious dislocations in her hips or broken bones. No scratches, bloody areas, etc.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Could this be a paralysis of some kind? Could it be due to oxygen deprivation? How well would a chicken breathe in a position such as the one she was in for that long?

I feel really bad...she's a lovely girl and very sweet, only about 5-6 months old and just started laying a couple of weeks ago. I don't think she's in pain but??? Might she get her balance and ability to walk back? All of our ladies free range. Right now I have her standing on a towel in front of the screen door. All of her buddies keep coming over for visiting hours...

I would really appreciate any suggestions you may have.....

thanks!

Give her time, just like people her limbs will fall asleep and things get pinched.

I would use pillows to form walls around her to help keep her upright.

Offer food/water or a mash of food every half hour or so.

She should *fingers crossed* be ok, just needs time to get everything circulating again.

Free choice oyster shells - I would offer them to her now also.

for you both

HorseFeatherz, Thank you! I will go get some oyster shells out for her.....

poor baby...hopefully this is all just pinched nerves or something like that

UPDATE on Maggie -

She is now able to walk, although extremely pidgeon-toed, and can't hop or jump....just crashes into things. She still falls over on her side but is able to right herself and stand. I put her back outside and am watching her.....I hope her balance gets better

If anyone has advice about identifying dislocations ( hip maybe?) and/or what to do I'd really appreciate it. Her right wing is still droopy, too.

thanks....

It is going to be touch and go for the next few hours... her improvement is something. The legs thrown out behind her is definitely the death throw so to have brought her back this far is really a good sign. Good luck!!!!

Thank you so much everyone...the advice and comfort really helped me today!

Maggie is out with her coop-mates tonight, was able to hop (clumsily and almost falling, but she still did it) into her favorite box with a buddy for the night. Hopefully she keeps improving!

Hi y'all! Maggie made it through the night!!

She still has a more pronounced 'duck waddle' when she walks and her wing is still droopy, but she seems to be moving around pretty well now, scratching, etc. I can't believe how well she is doing considering she couldn't even roost upright on her own yesterday afternoon, much less stand or walk.....

Go Maggie!
