If anyone has suggestions/advice for this chicken noob, please let me know....
long story short, is my EE banty hen fell between a concrete/stucco wall and the plywood back of the new coop. I didn't know where she was, and was looking all over for several hours. I feel awful!
I had to use a circular saw to cut the back wall of the coop out to get to her....DH is probably gonna kill me
So once I got her out, she was very floppy and had drooping feathers....legs kept stretching out behind her. I brought her inside and gave her some water with gatorade via syringe. (not a lot, just a few CCs or so a couple of times.) She started perking up a little, opening her eyes and 'talking' like she normally does a little. I held her upright in a towel on my lap for several hours while she rested. I couldn't seem to prop her up unless I held her - she would fall forward on her face and just lay there unless I held her in position.
She is now much more alert, has drank a little water on her own, had some mash and then some mash mixed with crumbles and scratch. She also laid a shell-less egg in my lap (eew). She's starting to preen a little and can now stand, but can't seem to walk or move her legs. If she does she flops over on her side and has a hard time righting herself.
When standing, her right wing droops to the ground. She looks down at her feet and wing like she's confused and pecks at them a little. She is now able to stand for quite a while, and has dozed off a little without falling.
I can't feel any obvious dislocations in her hips or broken bones. No scratches, bloody areas, etc.
Has anyone experienced anything like this? Could this be a paralysis of some kind? Could it be due to oxygen deprivation? How well would a chicken breathe in a position such as the one she was in for that long?
I feel really bad...she's a lovely girl and very sweet, only about 5-6 months old and just started laying a couple of weeks ago. I don't think she's in pain but??? Might she get her balance and ability to walk back? All of our ladies free range. Right now I have her standing on a towel in front of the screen door. All of her buddies keep coming over for visiting hours...
I would really appreciate any suggestions you may have.....
thanks!
