Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Thanks Trisha

I have one pullet that has double lacing, it's not great and she does not have as good type. The girl in the picture has a nice full tail and great back curve when she is strutting, I can't seem to get her to do it when I am camera in hand and lighting is good. I plan to breed her with my best Barnie Rooster this winter. I am still waiting to see how this years Barnie cockerels will come out. Luckily I kept a lot for growing and from the 10 or 12 double laced cockerels that I started with I am waiting on the best to show themselves, I usually wait until they are around 7 months before make my final cuts. I had to replace my Johan rooster that I lost so hopefully I will get some good choices and choose wisely.

I also am growing four blue project boys. Too scraggly for pictures right now.

Hopefully your heat wave broke.

We are enjoying a beautiful fall with clear 70 degree days and cool 50 degree nights. Birds are happy.

LOL, the heat is still here and we might reach 100 again this weekend. We didn't get any rain and the oaks are all turning brown. Hopefully we'll get rain soon:)

Here is one of my 2012 blue project pullets. She is single laced

Oh... WOW... How Beautiful!
I have just one Barnie, got her a couple of months ago, she's cute but WOW... yours is Gorgeous!!
By any chance are you attending the swap in Corvallis on Oct. 27? If so I will search you out, bring a chair, and just stare at these beauties for a while.

But seriously, I'd love to see more Barnies just to compare to the one I have. She was pretty roughed up when I got her, as well as having bumble foot, so I'd like to have the chance to see some healthy ones so I know what I'm working toward.

Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Hi everyone: I have a worming question.
I have never wormed my egg layers. I have 9 hens, a colorful mixed flock. I have never wormed them because I sell the eggs. They are 5 to 6 years old now. What should I worm them with? I saw an ad for a product that worms naturally and wouldn't stop the eggs from being eaten. Does it work? Verm-X?
These girls do get an hour each night out of the pen to forage and scratch around in the weeds. The laying is pretty good for old gals. Out of the 9, I usually get 5 or 6 eggs per day. What to do??? I tried pumpkin seeds. They didn't like them.

Hi Carolyn

I am not sure if I will be attending the Corvallis Swap, I may not have much to sell by late October and I am not buying anything right now, but of course it's fun to go and look and talk to others. Even if I don't go you are welcome to come to the farm and see my birds and if you are interested in a blue laced pullet I could part with one since I have five and several blue roosters to get me through next year. The girl pictured and the others will all be sold in the spring after breeding.

Your profile says Puget Sound are you coming all that way for the Chicken Swap? I live about 15 minutes from the Fairgrounds where it is being held so if you want to visit let me know. I have a lot of Johan pullets this year too and could be talked out of one or two. They have been really nice and very consistent in type, and lacing and I am hoping for even better egg color this year.

My blue birds are 3/4 Barnevelder and 1/4 blue Plymouth rock. Both lines have great temperaments and besides the blue rocks bring better egg production which I hope to keep as I work towards improving lacing and type in these. Their eggs look more like Barnevelder eggs than PR and that was the case even with the F1 pullets last year.

Let me know and we can hookup.

I think this Barnevelder Breeders Thread is as close as it comes to a Barnevelder Club... When I looked up a club a few years back I found a link to one that has since disbanded.

Some one tried to get one going on a Google group a couple years ago but I don't think much came of it.

It would probably be a good thing to start if we ever wanted to get new varieties into APA or wanted to tweak the standard.

Which reminds me of our conversation this spring about the APA Barnie standard and the laced vs black breast on roosters. I have been combing through my cockerels this summer and they have black - black breasts, not a bit of lacing or spotting on there breasts at least not now and they are 5 yo 6 months. This is true even though many of them have heavy red striping in the hackle and saddle. The only pure Barnie rooster I have right now that has any red centers in the breast feathers has 1/4 KC x Ledford blood in him. Interestingly though one of my blue project roosters has a fair amount of red in his breast. It will be interesting to see if any of his gold double laced sons will have this trait.

My blues are not based on BLRW but I was looking at photos of the BLRW roosters online and they have strong lacing in the breast, I suppose this comes with the Co/Co genotype, and I think BLRW also have a mahogany gene, and I don't know how that figures in,

Trisha you probably know...is this correct, do BLRW have mahogany? I am curious Trisha if you are seeing more red in the breasts of your blue roosters than your pure BV.

Thanks
Andy

Andy, I think some BLR dottes have Mahogany, but I'm not sure if it effects the amount of red in the breast. The first few generations of my blue cockerels had some red in their breasts. But I took that to be because they had a copy of Columbian. Now, all of my blue cockerels have solid blue breasts because they've been crossed back to Barnevelder several times. My blue and pure males do have a tiny bit of red on the sides of their breasts and deep on the center of the down feather of the breast. But, other than that very little visible red shows on the breast.

One of my blue pullets is laying now, but I haven't caught her in the act yet. I would call her eggs darker than the average BV with good gloss too. She's laid 3 so far and the 3rd egg is really nice sized for a pullet.

I wish I could share some more pics of overseas barnies with laced breasts vs solid black, but our computer crashed and died ( I think forever this time). I'm using a borrowed lap top right now. I just hope we can salvage our pics off our old computer...It's been several months since we backed up any info on it.
