Hi Steve,
That's about what I run my humidity at. Not much more than 35% and then 60-70% during lockdown. With the higher humiditys I seem to get chicks that are dead in the shell (drowned I assume) and a sometimes sticky chicks.

Jen, let them rest at least a day:) I've also heard that putting them in the bator and not turning them for the first day or two can help with detached aircells.

Trisha

Agreed. Mine actually rested 48hrs because I was waiting on some other eggs to arrive the next day that were going in to the 'bator at the same time.

I'm new at this hatching business. What is the story behind detached air cells? Does it cause them to not develop? or, do they develop in the wrong position?

If you lay an egg with a detached air cell on it's side (or lean it over on it's side, like in some turners) the air cell moves to the side of the egg instead of the fat end where it's supposed to be. Then when the chick tries to hatch, it can't find the air and drowns.

Morning Everyone!!!! Had my first oops happen......when I looked in the 'bator this morning and was expecting to see Olive eggers, Marans and Welsummers.....I squealed in delight to see a little Barnie baby staring at me from with in.

I didn't remember setting any Barnie eggs with this batch....but oops there it was!!!!! I took the shell out and sure enough I wrote Barnie on it and everything but must not have been paying any attention when setting the eggs and set it directly in with the Wellies. What makes it an even better surprize.....it's a pullet.
