Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Just got my eggs from Johan...they are huge! Some of them I had a hard time figuring out which was the small end! I am admittedly new to incubating and hatching so am wondering about something and would love to get some opinions. This is the first batch of hatching eggs I have recd where some are kind of dirty. Majority of them are fine but there are one or two that I am not sure what to do with. If you look at the on egg in the bottom right it is the worst and there are maybe two or three others not quite in that condition but still....I can live with it, just worried about bacteria once they start incubating. Let them be or wash off? I already tried to light sand off but not really helping.

I would most definitely wash those!

I know there are many who say to never wash the eggs and talk about washing off the bloom and such. Do some research and I think you'll find that's overrated. I can tell you that many years ago I did some experimenting with both washed and washed eggs. There was no noticeable difference between the two and, in fact, the washed eggs had a VERY slight advantage over the unwashed eggs.

God Bless,

Our hatch seems to be done. We have 8 Barnie Babies in the brooder!

I tried taking pics but they just won't stand still long enough. I'll try again tomorrow.
Trisha is sending me another batch on Monday, making some of those eggs laid on Easter Sunday. I like that a lot. Talk about hatching vibes!
I left the eggs that didn't hatch in the incubator just in case.......but they only have until tomorrow afternoon and then I have to clean out the bator and get it ready for more eggs. Of course, mid-hatch I had 2 laying hens go broody, they couldn't have done that a couple weeks earlier and done the egg sitting for me.

And then of course they'll change their minds by the time the next eggs get here

Okay I am now on day 22 and nothing all for were alive and kicking at lockdown now nothing. So questions do barnies take a little longer yo hatch? Also I used an egg turner then at lockdown took them out and put them on their side small side leaning down would that be a problem?

Rachael,

I recently put 8 in lockdown after being in egg turner but put them in egg cartons instead of on their sides. All were active when they went in but only 5 hatched and they didn't even start doing anything until day 21 and 22. All are still good. Good luck and I hope they hatch. I read somewhere else on the thread once that someone else was waiting as well and was told to keep on waiting a few more days. It can't hurt.

I just picked up 4 barnies that were just hatched. I had read that you could sex them by the color of their belly/chest. They all looked very similar to me. I did notice one distinct feature though. Some of them had slid brown heads and others had a light colored stripe going down the sides of their head. Does this mean anything? These are my first ones.

Thanks for your time,

The two with the solid dark heads are barnevelders
the other two look like welsummers
good news is they both look like girls
do not know how to sex the barnies at this age but the wellies have a darker V on the top of their heads and the stripe of dark like eyeliner along the side of their heads.
