Can someone kindly comment on the quality of Barnevelders from Meyer's hatchery based on the pictures on their website? Please comment via PM if you don't feel comfortable posting it on the main thread.

They kinda look like Black Laced mixed. Someone is trying to sell me a cockerel they bought from their hatchery which looks good but I have doubts about color pattern quality.

In the chick picture on their site, the chick on the far left isn't a barnevelder - it looks more like a welsummer.

I agree that their pictures may not represent what they are actually breeding. If you are interested in breeding, I would get a cockerel from another breeder.

It could be a Barnevelder. The Aussies get a lot of chicks like that. But it's e+ wild type and not desirable. But I have heard of the hatcheries crossing with Welsummers, so that could be where it's coming from.

Too bad you are not close to me @Happy Chooks . I will just let mine grow out and see even if mine are good quality or not before seeking any fresh blood. I heard a lot of good things about a breeder out of Ohio thats why I got these from them, however after I bought them, I found out that they retired their breeding flock (for aging) and these are the last few chicks they had. So kind of apprehensive if something else was going on. It might be just a routine for them and I am just being paranoid. The chicks are healthy but their feathers are almost half the size of their Maran counterparts hatched with them and from the same breeder. Is it their normal growth patten? I am talking about the wing feathers.

Also, typically at what age are we able to sex the Barneis

Depending on the line, chicks can be sexed by chick down color at a day old. Otherwise, it's usually obvious at 8-12 weeks old. They do tend to be slow growing and probably won't get as big as your Marans either.

Mine are supposed to be BLR. Are BLRs sex-able with down color? I noticed some of them are dark(almost black) vs some are just dark bronze. I can post some pics if that helps!

Does BLR stand for blue laced red? Blue or black shouldn't matter, but it is a characteristic that has to be selected for. Like I said, it depends on the line. If they have the gene, females will have brown or gray breasts. Males will have white or yellow chests. Like anything, it isn't 100%. I have a couple I thought were cockerels that I now suspect are pullets. I'll still use them for breeding, at least this year, because I desperately need more pullets.

I have 22 adult Barnevelder hens and about 40 youngsters left from picking through all the chicks I've hatched this year. Cockerels are looking very nice this year. I just built a small bachelor coop, so I can keep an extra male or two this year.
