Barnevelder breeders lets work together and improve the breed

Citron_d'uccle :

I am SO glad I found this thread. I purchased a dozen Barnevelder chicks from a local gentleman in March. When I went to pick up the chicks he showed me around his operation and to say the least I was very impressed. Four of the chicks I purchased were roosters, I gave three to a neighbor so I now have six hens (two died. Dang dogs.) and a rooster. I got my first egg 8/28. It was a very dark brown terra cotta color. I am VERY much looking forward to working with this breed. Also, my hens are VERY dark brown with copper/gold lacing. I will try to post pic.

Can't wait to see your eggs! Congrats!

I say boy. The comb is the give-away.

Can you (or anybody) explain what exactly it is about the comb? I know when they are older it will defintely look different from the girls, but what do I look for now?

I didn't look at the photo so I am going to assume that the roo's comb is alot bigger, fatter and more red than the pullets are, his wattles should be bigger than the females too. Also, at this age he should be starting to look a little different than the pullets as he will lose his lacing and should start turning a solid mahogany color in the hackle, saddles and wing bow area. The pullets will remain laced. Hope this helps and if I am wrong I know some great BYC'ers will come by and set my straight.

Hi Beck! You will love the Barnies...they are a very sweet breed of birds. I don't know who the top breeders are but I can tell you that there is a gentleman by the name of Johan VanArchterburg in Conneticut who has lovely birds and he is not all that far from you. He does ship eggs but I believe he is not shipping them this time of year, he prefers to ship in the spring when the girls have started laying again. I have birds from him and in my opinion they are the best quality Barnies around, JMHO, but I am sure someone else will come along and give their opinions as well and share the breeders that they like as well.

I have an entire flock of Barnevelders that I am offering only in breeding pairs and trios. I have 4 breeding trios available.

These birds are great quality and lay very nice medium brown eggs. I bought my original hatching eggs from Triple Y yard Birds 2 years ago. I have been breeding based on the advice I have gotten here and all other that I could find from great breeders.

If anyone is interested please contact me.

Hi Barnie nuts! I have not heard much about rate of lay for the breed. My 2 barnies layed a couple weeks ago then nothing since. I believe it was their first eggs. they are now 27wks. any input would be great.

I got mine from Fossil Rock Farm down by Cazenovia, NY. I have a trio from her and they are just wonderful. Check out her website http://www.fossilrockfarm.com/. Wonderful person to work with and gorgeous birds to boot! Good luck!
