Speaking of smoke thats what my brain does with the whole genetics thing. So, the first one who develops a silver barnie has me for a customer. I love the looks of barnevelders plus my husband is dutch, but my favorite color is the silver.

They take FOREVER to lay, so don't give up on them. My first one started laying at 32 weeks, the 2nd was a few weeks later. They may get delayed a bit longer with the shorter days. They WILL lay.

Got our first barnie egg today! We saw our pseudo-bantam Barnie girl sitting on the nest, then we saw her coming out and was singing the egg song just as loud and happy as she could be! So when she was off at a safe distance, I peeked my head into the coop, looked in the nest where she'd been sitting... lo and behold, there it was! Her lovely little light brown barnevelder pullet egg with a little blood spot (as is often the case with most of my hens when they lay their first 1-2 eggs). Her egg is light brown with a few darker speckles, but my other "dark brown layers" laid their first 5-6 eggs kinda light, then they darkened up so I am not worried! And this is the one that supposed to be a bantam barnevelder but is the same size as my LF barnie & her egg is the same size as the pullet eggs my LF birds have laid! That's why I call Inga my "pseudo-bantam barnevelder".

Hi Shannon! Congrats on the new layers!

The egg color washes off of Marans, Welsummers, Barnevelders and Penedesenca's eggs because these breeds of chickens have something like a little mini paint booth going on in there and the color is sprayed on as the egg travels through the oviduct on the way to nest box or the coop floor. The longer the egg is in transit the darker the egg should be, but each girl is different and so are the paint booths and painting techniques.

Thanks, i had heard that of brown eggs being painted on....but didn't know the specifics....Also interesting is that true Ameraucana eggs are colored all the way thru so if you remove the inside membrane, it should be the same inside and out. Happy Holidays All, eliz

By the way.....my 2 year old Barnie girl doesn't lay in the nest box either, she prefers the floor of the coop just as you step in the door.

For the information of All Hands: Anyone looking to buy a late Christmas present for themselves or someone else in the form of photography gear, I may have some helpful info for you.

I just spent about 6 months researching cameras, lenses, flashes, you-name-it. In doing so I came across some excellent sites which allow you to do a side-by-side comparison of various brands/models and see the similarities/differences according to each of the various specs. There were also sites that provided indepth reviews on same. I also looked at a half dozen to maybe a dozen different sites to purchase from.

Even though I still wound up spending over three grand for everything, I could have easily spent another $1500-2000 for the same stuff if I hadn't taken the time to research everything like I did. So I'm offering to pass on what I learned to anyone who might be in need of such info. If interested, email me as I may not see your request on here.

Btw, now that I have my new camera, I plan to start a photo album consisting of a weekly pic for male and female from Day Old thru 1-year of age. I also plan to build a new website where I'll put these photos so all can see them when they have a question about what their bird should look like at a given age.

God Bless,

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and new to barnevelders. I've spent some time reading this thread (yes, all 162 pages!) and am impressed with how friendly everyone is and how graciously questions are answered and knowledge is shared.

Not to mention that you've got some drop-dead gorgeous birds!

Well... it's nice to meet you, and I'm looking forward to getting started with some hatching eggs or chicks soon.

Valerie, in Western Washington
