Nice to meet you. Do you have chickens or are you looking at getting some?

Thank you for the welcome, Shireshome.

I am looking to get some chickens, although first I'll be researching and purchasing an incubator (just in case I wind up with eggs instead of chicks).

My experience with chickens is fairly limited -- we had some from a hatchery about 10-15 years ago, and only had them for a few years, so there is a bit of a learning curve for me. I can see where incubating chicks could be really addictive.

It is very addictive. I remember when DH first brought home the "fridgubator" (a fridge that has been turned into an incubator) I said "Good grief what's that for?!" he replied "It's to incubate eggs in" I said "How many does it hold?" He said "Only 90" I said

I didn't like it one bit for the first 21 days, then when the first chick hatched

I too am in Western Washington.....SW Washington, approx. 1 hour north of Portland.....maybe if we are close enough to one another, we can get you some chicks later this spring.

I feel guilty when I only set 12 or so eggs in my 'bator that will incubate 284. Good Gosh, could you imagine if I filled it up??????? My DH would seriously have me committed.

Hi!

@Shireshome: Wow, a fridgubator -- what a great name! I love repurposing stuff. Your story made me smile, I can just picture the

@pinkchick: I'm on the Enumclaw Plateau, about 3 hours North of Portland. What kind of incubator do you have that holds 284? Not like I really need that capacity, although need is such a subjective thing. You know how it is with those potato chips.

@Happy Chooks: Thanks for the welcome! Was it you that recommends a certain thermometer? Is it the Brinsea Spot Check?

I'm leaning towards a HovaBator 1588 to start off with. The Brinsea sale ends today and I had a hard time making such a fast (for me) decision, but I figure the HovaBator could always become a hatcher.

LB, just in case no one has mentioned it yet, I have Sportsman 1502 that I bought used and it came with a lot of accessories that I would've had to pay extra for had I bought new. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the new model but it works perfectly for me. Sometimes you can find them on CL and such for a whole lot more than a new one. I think I remember seeing a couple of used incubators for sale at the show three weeks ago.

So all that is just to say that with a little looking you may be able to find a used incubator that works great and save a bunch of money at the same time.

God Bless,

Ha! At least you have someone to help you. My DH would be trying to stack an extra 30 eggs on top of the 284!

Seriously though, have you ever filling it? What fun that would be. See, with my reasoning if you have a bator that will hold that many don't you have to try it at full capacity just once, you know to make sure you got your monies worth and all?

....Yes, this is why I can never buy a bator that holds more then 90.
