Barnevelder or barnevelder cross?

Last spring I purchased a few barnevelder chicks from a hatchery. I recently purchased a few young barnevelder hens from someone and they look more true to breed than my previous hen. I attached a few pictures of her. Could she be crossed with something else? If so, what? Or is she a different type of barnevelder? I also attached the picture of the rooster that came with her when I purchased them as chicks. Thanks

That was next question, if the rooster was a barnevelder or not. Was hoping so to breed the other hens I purchased. Partridge Rocks weren’t even available to purchase from the hatchery. She sure looks just like one though!!

The rooster is definitely a Barnevelder but the hen looks closer to a Partridge Rock. Maybe feather color will change as she matures. What hatchery did you purchase them from?

Then I definitely believe she a Barnevelder. Maybe just not the best quality or standard.

Im questioning it all now haha! There’s so much similarity in the roosters for the Partridge rock and Barnevelders. Hope he’s a barnevelder. If not, the hatchery made extra money by selling me partridge rocks lol

Barnevelders are much darker than partridge rocks. They should have the double laced color pattern, like dark Cornish. Partridge rocks have crescentic penciling, which is different. However, double laced Barnevelders can and do sometimes produce regular penciled offspring. So the hen could be a partridge rock or a Barnevelder that has sported to partridge. The cock is definitely a Barnevelder.

If you want good double laced Barnevelders, wait to get a hen with the right color pattern before breeding. If you just want pretty layers, go ahead and breed them.
