barred/cuckoo araucana? PIC ADDED PG 6

I am working on a whole bunch of new colors simply because I want to. I do have breeding pens though of the recoginized colors. I have so many rumpless tufted birds that I pretty much breed from only rumlpess tufted. I never breed from a tailed bird. Krista check out the colors on the splashes on the ACA Forum under the thread Check Out These Splashes, and see if your barred cockoo is close to any pictured.

The lavender is not an accepted color, but it does breed true. It was bred to meet all of the other standards set forth by the club. The color is not something that just popped out by willy nilly breeding, so it is an ameraucana. That is what the AOV (any other variety) category is for. We are hoping to get the lavender and the splash varieties accepted to the APA Standard in the next five years.

Someone is breeding dark legged splash? PLEASE do post pics!

I'm reluctantly joining this conversation...

I am a regular lurker on the Ameraucana board as well. I have seen first hand they "attitude" of some of the original members. It's not so much that they are trying to be rude, I think it's more some are not ready for change.

Several people are working on new varieties, a lady I talked to last year was starting with lemon blues. Last year I considered trying a Mille Fluer version. Now with the barring. Everyone trying a new variety gets shot down, or at the very least not encouraged. Most of the time it's with the slate legs thing because there are modifyer genes that lighten pigment.

My opinion is that the perception of slate varies from person to person, and genetically slate is slate, regardless of pigment lessoning modifiers. Light slate is still slate to me.

Or, we could go another way (like OE breeders do) and have the leg color determined by variety, rather than by breed.

Something I've been thinking of...

I agree on the color perception and it is something I am struggling with as I read my SOP. Color is so subjective, what is horn to one is tan or beige or any color really to another. I think it would be helpful if the SOP included photos of what they consider the appropriate shade of any color as a reference for the rest of us.

Are you talking about Ameraucanas, or Araucanas. The thread started about Araucanas. Here's a picture of a Splash Ameraucana with nice slate legs

those ARE nice legs! All the splash I know have pinky looking legs with grey dabs here and there. What genetics did you use to keep them that dark? Just start with really heavy pigmented blues? My friend has REALLY dark blue cochins. There is a darkly speckled splash in with them. I will have to go see what color the legs and feet are on that bird now... Thanks for sharing. I am trying to learn as much as I can as fast as I can. Sorry if I am a pain.

Since we are talking about Ameraucana, I have a question. Gary, I hatched 2 splash and quite a few blues from the Ameraucana eggs I got from you. I only kept the splash and 1 blue. I gave the rest(at 6 +/- weeks) to another BYC member as I really had too many birds. They are 12 weeks now and all(the ones I kept) look to be pullets. Wouldn't their combs be red if any are cockerals? I wasn't sure if your line matures later? I might just have to get more eggs in spring

As for the pic, I am still looking for the wire, if I can't find it soon I will have to use a different camera, it just isn't as good
