Barred Plymouth Rock Gender!

Are you sure its a barred rock? I bought last year 6 what I was told was barred rocks. Only 2 were a boy and a girl. The rest were black sex link boys and they had the black wash down their legs. I'm going to say black sex link roo.

I just fostered a barred rock for a friend and I had the same question. Friend did some research and found out that females are more black with white...males are more 50/50. Females have a sort of "spray painted" dark stripe down the front of their legs. The assertive attitude and "in your face" way of taking her turn first were just her own little personality. She's now about ten weeks old and still no crowing or tail feathers. Oh, and Esther's blond "yarmulke" was pretty big and constant. I vote for "she."

I'm 95% sure that its a barred rock. She/he is from a reputable breeder.

She/He is also very in your face! She always eats first and likes to sleep on boxes... she/he s and interesting one for sure! Hope we can keep her

I was under the impression that barred rock roosters have much more color to their legs while the hens are either dusty or grey. Can't quite tell from the pics if that's all glare from the flash or if the legs have that much orange to them.

I think it's a cockerel with pullet-colored legs. With the BRs not just one trait points to male or female, it's a combination. The spot on the head looks roo-ish, the splotchiness of the body looks roo-ish, and the feathers coming in look more barred. I have three BRs supposed to be all pullets, but Henrietta was changed to Henri. Misty and Bernadette had very dark bodies and feathered out initially with black with little white splotches, but Henri had more obvious barring and turned out with more white than black, he also had the very splotchy-grey body, which is why I purchased him-go figure! His comb grew practically overnight when he was 4-5 weeks old, and his first attempt at crowing was at 7 weeks- but he hasn't done it since, and he's now about 14 weeks. Of course we had another cockerel who's doing his fair share of crowing, so I guess Henri is happy with being the beta roo.

I read somewhere on here about putting one of those cable ties around a roos neck- not super tight, but tight enough they can't expand their neck to crow. I haven't tried it, but it's worth looking into for someone who loves their roo but don't want to disturb the neighbors.

Just for comparison, here is one of my 2 BR Roos at 3 weeks. I believe this is Alpha.
