They look just like mine -- pretty large combs, very red. Mine lay Jumbo and Large eggs, 5 days a week (almost every day in summer).

The roos are much lighter, and would have been crowing by now!

Also, in PBR the brring is indicative of sex....as shown in the photo posted by @BlackIce shows how the double barring gene of males expresses.

Is this generally the case with all hens?

Sorry if I missed a direct reply to this question... The answer is yes. All hens reaching point of laying (POL) will have plumper, redder combs and wattles. In some breeds they will also develop a flush of pink/red on their legs. These signs of fertility/egg production decrease during molting and in non-laying periods of winter. I was surprised to learn that hens combs can shrink noticeably at these times!
