Thanks for the info! The neighbors have a rooster so I don't think it's a big deal if we have one here.

Sorry if I missed a direct reply to this question... The answer is yes. All hens reaching point of laying (POL) will have plumper, redder combs and wattles. In some breeds they will also develop a flush of pink/red on their legs. These signs of fertility/egg production decrease during molting and in non-laying periods of winter. I was surprised to learn that hens combs can shrink noticeably at these times!
