All hens reaching point of laying (POL) will have plumper, redder combs and wattles. In some breeds they will also develop a flush of pink/red on their legs. These signs of fertility/egg production decrease during molting and in non-laying periods of winter. I was surprised to learn that hens combs can shrink noticeably at these times!

We have two barred rocks about 18 1/2 weeks old. These are backyard chickens and we can’t own a rooster.
Very concerned the one “hen” looks more like a rooster. Can anyone help? We need to find a new home if it’s a rooster before the crowing starts! thanks!
