Barred Rocks are an excellent breed, Welp is a good hatchery. They send them at a day old and they'll be fine.

Pullets are female chicks. That's what you want.

A few other titles I read before my chicks arrived are: "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" by Damerow, "Keeping Chickens" by Hobson and Lewis, and "Raising Chickens" by Haynes.
