Barred Rock Ladies by Request (Added Blue Orpingtons)

ummm... the cloth thing on their backs??? Is this to stop damage from the roos when mating?

... I'm thinking of some barred rocks or Blue Orp/Australorps to add to my flock down the track. How well do you think BRs would do in a suburban backyard (penned but with several hours of free range every day)?

Yes, the saddles are necessary for Suede's women. Due to his size, he tends to damage the girls, even when we trim his spurs.

The BRs do fine in most settings. Lately, mine are penned and only get to range about once a week, but at the moment, I'm growing grass and have to keep them locked up in the pen for a couple weeks.

No, the Hinkles don't have Blues to my knowledge, just lavs, blacks and I think whites. I got Suede and Velvet (who died a year ago) from BamaChicken, Skye (who died a couple months ago) from Jim Cox in W. VA and Dusty and Smoky from someone on the west coast.

Thanks! Dutch used to be really calm and sweet, stood still to be picked up, etc, but he sort of changed his opinion of me personally for some reason after I had to remove him from his girls for his own protection every night for a couple weeks (they were picking on his comb and wattles at roost time). He was a year and a half old, so this is not the usual rooster aggression. Most of the time, he's just fine around me, eats out of my hand, etc. Sometimes, when my back is turned, he'll rush me, but not make contact. Overall, he's an excellent rooster, though. His crippled brother Zane is the love of my life (in my avatar).
