Barred rock or cuckoo Marans

I got these chicks advertised as cuckoo Marans but I believe they are actually barred rocks. Any ideas?

Definitely not cuckoo Marans (wrong skin color). Where did you get them? I'm thinking you'll need to wait for them to feather because it doesn't look like they're barred Rocks either. Might be mixes.

Cuckoo and barred can be VERY similar. What makes you think they are rocks and not Marans?

They look like Marans to me more than Rocks. I believe the bottom of the Marans feet should be pink. While a Rocks' feet may be yellow?

I got them from a local farmer, he also sold me 2 dozen dark brown eggs. If they are not Marans that’s ok, I’m just curious. They have yellow legs which is why I think the are BRs and not cuckoos.

I breed French Black Copper... But to me your chicks look the same as the hatchery cuckoo's... which I don't know the SOP for. Rock eggs are not dark brown at all. More medium to light. Maybe you got what he was selling truthfully and just paranoid.

I have raised Rock's and NONE looked like your chicks.

Your local farmer may be JUST breeding and NOT care about the SOP, therefor not cull birds who don't fit.

Either way, good looking chicks!

It could be that he has mixes with enough Marans in them that they'll lay dark brown and are just not showable. For backyard purposes, no biggie. I just pause a bit at the really gray one and the way the feathers are edged in white. I hope you'll post pics after they're grown.

Ok, I certainly will! And if culling means ridding of we are not going to do that. I love the little guys!!!
