Hello everyone! I have a chick I picked up from Atwoods that was unlabeled and in a mixed batch of other breeds. It looks a lot like a barred rock, but I wondered if it is more likely a commercial hybrid or even another similar breed. Thanks for the help in advance!!

Yeah, it looks like a Barred Plymouth Rock. As @Ol Grey Mare said most likely a cockerel.

Thank you! Just so I know, how can you tell it is a cockerel? I the comb is still really small and the legs are dark, so I didn’t know what to look for.

With Barred Rocks you can tell, as males will have white feathers with grey stripes, and females will have grey feathers with white stripes. Just google 'male barred rock' and you'll see what I mean :)

Male barred rocks feather in differently than females. Males have two copies of the barring gene, resulting in a pattern of wider white bars and an overall lighter color appearance. Here is a photo of a male and female barred rock close to this same age so you can see the difference....the pullet is the bird up front, mostly dark with small white spots....the cockerel is standing up towards the back with very clear barring

You have a nice BR cockerel. Females have black barring with narrow white bands and generally a black wash over yellow legs and feet.

Males are a grayer barring and wider white bands. Their legs are yellow.
