how accurate is barred rock color sexing? one of my friends two had a white spot on its head and is bigger but has no other signs of rooishness...

Leg color. The females will have more black running down the front of their legs. The male's legs will be nearly yellow and thicker than the hens. I don't go by those head spots solely.

This link is good for Barred Rocks, Cuckoo Marans and Dominiques and has very good photos. Of course, that's for chicks just hatched till a few days old. Both sexes have head spots. You don't sex by one trait, but by three: head spot size and regularity, plumage or down color, and leg color, all taken together.
