So, I need to start paying my parents back for buying my chickens, their coop, and feed, which equals up to about $700, and I think a good way to start on that is selling eggs, and once i can breed my chickens, baby chickens. I have a problem though, i don't want to rush into something a breed my chicken too soon. Could anyone give me an approximate time after my hen starts laying to breed her to a Roo? and would the time vary per breed of chicken> Ive got silkies and a Gold Laced Wynadotte as well, and they would probably sell better at the farmers market that the barred rock chicks, though they are all cute as babies just the same.
Determining when the cockerel is ready is fairly easy as his actions tell all. Once he's effectively and properly mounting the girls, and their eggs are showing fertility, then you should be good to go.
The pullets take a little more care in my opinion. I know there's more than one perspective on this, but mine is that I don't like to try hatching eggs that are too small for a full-sized bird. You can expect a Silkie egg to be small....maybe 1.20 ounces...and still hatch properly, but I would suggest that with your larger breeds it's advantageous to wait until they're laying larger eggs, closer to 2.0 ounces. I'm getting ready to set some NN Turken, Barred Rock and Australorp eggs in the incubator this week and have established a minimum weight requirement of 1.76 ounces and up.
