battery hens/ commercial layers-- rescue time!!

I tried rescuing and free-ranging some leghorns from egg farm. They make good fryers after u pump alot of high pro into them. U would be better to buy some meaties and feed them. Those egg farms must be silly to get rid of the hens after only 1 year? Those fellas aren't stupid and the price is a bit high. BTW I only had 1 hen out of 60 that went outside and she never foraged outside. They did lay again after molt for about 3 weeks then laying dropped off. I sold them as fryers and they were fit for that after many weeks of feeding. I sold them at a loss to get them out of my coop.

I don't replace my leghorn hens until they die of old age. They lay good enough for me to never complain, other than complaining about having too many eggs and nothing to do with them, at several years of age. My oldest was 7 yrs old, I lost her earlier this year and she layed right up until she died. Not every day but several times a week. And 50 cents a head is too high? I don't know about you but a laying hen down here will bring between $12-$15 normally. Even if they were in their second year, and I was close enough to you, I'd jump on them. That's a bargain if you ask me.

I rescued some hens from an amish farm that I think had battery cages. They charged $2 per bird so this is a good deal. If I was closer or brought a cage with me on my current trip i might have just picked some up

PS make sure you try to quarantine them mine were covered in mites.
