Having BYC friends to send you comforting words in a sad time really does help and mean a lot to me. Thank you all.
Steffanie, I'm definitely going to be planting something where I buried Edmund, I just have to figure out what!
Renee, I did consider for a moment if it could have been a two legged predator that got him but our backyard is pretty secure, the intruder would of had to come into our property from the creek to really be unnoticed. I just can't imagine someone going to the trouble.
Daphne, how is the broody momma in Berkeley doing???
Luke, have you spoke with Bridget yet today?
On a bit of a lighter note, I will be purchasing another Orpington from Bamachicken, she has a four month old splash cockerel who is 99.5% English in breeding. My Edmund was only 50%, so this will actually help my breeding program immensely. Not only will getting the cockerel from Bama promote biodiversity within my flock but the infusion of pure English blood will significantly help with type and confirmation to the SOP.
With this weird twist of fate the chicks produced by my birds will be 75% English in heritage, there should also be more vigor and better productivity produced within the future generations of chicks as well because of the genetic outcross to another line.
Oh and I will be setting a dozen Blue Wheaten Ameraucana eggs tonight, my girls are finally laying somewhat better!

I really, really hope that she has a decent hatch! I gave her the eating eggs I had on my counter from the week, I do hope to see some little fuzzies with their momma soon!

Jeremy,
I'll let you know when they hatch
, and you can go over and see them before/after work ... and, I'll see you in two weeks ...
Hi everyone.
I'm back to Sillycon Valley after a week at a convention. I really missed my dog and my chickens. I have to say DS did a great job of taking care of them for the week. And I had almost 2 dozen eggs waiting for me! Wow.
I went out this morning to see if the chickens remembered me - apparently they do. They all came running for treats. I am really happy with the mix of chickens - they're so pretty! I have a range of golden color from Buff to Black (with copper hackles), gold and brown predominating. I love all the variations of solids and stripes and speckles. They're just so pretty.
Sorry to read about your roo Jeremy - glad it sounds like you've got a good plan going forward. I'll try to catch up to what everyone is up to around here.
I also posted in Ca Northern, but I need to rehome these 2 cockerels I got yesterday. They are 3 weeks 5 days old (hatched 2/16). They are splash marans and have feathered legs. I was hoping for at least one pullet!!! I'm really bummed.
If anyone is up near Orinda and is coming down this way to the South Bay, I would love it if you could pick me up a pullet from the same hatch!
