Bay Area BYCers!

Beautiful eggs Jeremy! I wish I had some of my old cameras so I could take nicer pictures here. And your Sumatra is so pretty. I need mine to start laying. Right now I have black and I want blue.

I have an OE that is 1/4 Wellie and lays an olive egg usually with spots. Then she's also laid an olive or teal with a blue spot. They're really cool to see.

Egg color here is lightening up and there are feathers all over. Guess I know what that means. Another moult. No eggs soon.

I have my darkest American Game hen trying to take over my FBCM broodies box. I have her all blocked off on the back porch, but that hen wiggles her way in there somehow. I have both of them now with Broody Butts. Tail feathers are bent and they stick straigh over their backs. I tried giving the Game some eggs, but she wants those. They were due today and a chick hatched days ago and I found it dead. Don't know why it hatched so early, but guessing it was the heat. Still it died and no signs of hatching from the 3 out of 12 that were under her.

I have several OE pullets outside, but no eggs yet. Wonder if I'll be feeding free loaders again untill february.

I had a little trouble with LD today and then a cat attacked one of my bigger pullets and she now has a necked neck. No skin was cut, but he got away with a mouth FULL of feathers. Stupid Cat! I swear by the time I get done, there won't be any cats in my neighborhood. Kind of tired of getting scratched when I corner and catch them too. Then the gas to get to the shelter. Pain in the behind.

We had to take Willow in to the vet. She's doing a bit better now; was dehydrated. X-rays didn't show an eggbound or anything else wrong, but the doc thinks she might have an infection of some sort. Gave me antibiotics. I'm going to also give her yogurt and garlic to help with any infections. Willow was one of my first two chickens - her and Buffy. I hope she gets better. I may not make it to Heirloom Expo if she doesn't show some marked improvement by tomorrow.

Anna I hope she's going to be alright.

My little Mille Fluer d'Uccle roo hurt his leg somehow. I don't really know what's going on and what to do for him. His in the house in a box that kind of holds him in a bit to help keep the leg under him. He got out a couple of times, but it's like he's doing the splits. I noticed it a few days ago, but after checking all day he seemed fine. The next morning he was on his back kicking his legs out. He's eating and drinking and I'm giving him vitamins, but other than that I'm not sure what else to do. He was one of my first birds at this house and I sold the other trying to cut back. I still have to hear about how I separated Edward and Jacob and how Edward is lonely now. Good ole Makayla!

I stuck 14 eggs under my AG Juliet. Her other chicks are really pretty. One looks more Game, but really dark with a light collar. Juliet is my darkest Game. Anyway she insists on being broody. I didn't count how many of each, but she only has SPPRs and FBCMs this time. I hate how I always find broken eggs in the nests, so I gave her lots this time. I figure if I get one or two out of these I'm going to be excited, so here's hoping the first coupleof days next month that she'll have done a better job than me.

Still nothing from my FBCM hen. She only has 3 eggs left and they were due yesterday. She's been in the nest so long her tail is a mess. Hopefully it goes nack to normal after she's done or she moults.

Too bad I don't have a picture of me taking that picture...hahaha.....I guess I'm having a hard time growing up. Some like to call it a "mid life" crises, but I'm way past midlife and I started doing this when I was 16. I am competitive as heck and with motorsports there is no judge...just extremely accurate timing devices that have more zero's than you need. I won a race by 1/10000th of a second once.

I saw the entries for the show and they will have 200 birds. Not a lot, but good diversity of breeds. There will be quite a few turkeys. Maybe 15 waterfowl. Out of the 200 entered, 150 will be large fowl chickens. 150 LF is actually pretty good for a show this early. This is too early for most of us to show chickens. The event in general should be awesome!

150 different LF breeds? Or just 150 LF birds altogether?

Either way, how exciting! My partner tried to push me into entering a few of our English Orpingtons into the show... but I chickened out.

I don't think I've reached that level of comfort yet, or if I ever will, to exhibit my birds. I will have pictures of my cell phone though!

jtaylormade, thanks! I hope to see many of you there.

150 LF total.

Picture overload, from this afternoon, baby English Orpingtons! They're entering the not-so-cute-little-feathered-gangly-dinosaur stage.

I LOVE the way this chick is feathering in, so "splashy" already.

Fatty tried to get out, then got stuck.

But it made it.

What kind of trouble did LD get into or cause? His ex-harem has decided that I'm their roo now! It's amazing how much friendlier they are without him around. But I still miss our big boy! :)

Gah . . . internet went out on Friday night and we just now got it working again. Such a frustrating weekend! In any case, many thanks to you all who responded to my inquiry about fertile eggs. Sorry for having disappeared after I put that request out there! I really appreciate the many kind offers of eggs!! I can likely get to Concord tomorrow, if not later in the week, so I think I'll contact Paul Pleece and see what I can buy from him. Our school's garden teacher has already picked up a few rescue hens and was very receptive to the idea of us hatching a few more chicks for the school. She has a very strong bond with my daughter and knows how exciting it would be for her to have our little frizzle hatch some babies. This is new territory for me, so we'll see how it goes. Thanks again, everyone!

Got a little freaked out, jumped over me and wacked me in the eye with his wing (that really hurt BTW), gave me and Makayla some excercise chasing him around the yard, hid under an over grown stump, kept me, Makayla, Dakotah and his friend at arms distance away while hiding in a palm. Just a typical day and Kim's house. LOL

I heard we had thunder storms coming and was working out back and had just tested his soon to be new digs and it started to sprinkle. I was just trying to get him in safe, so he didn't get scared or soaked. He was fine afterwards. Didn't have to brib him like I did Ziggy. LOL

Oh and he is bold. He's tried to take on all the AM cockerels, now runs from the FBCM cockerel, and I was worried a bantam Wellie roo was gonna be the one that whipped him. I spent yesterday out back working with the hose in my hand to stop the fights. LD ran them all down one at a time and wasn't doing to good holding his own for th time it took me to aim and spray. Might have to do something about Sterling. I love him, but he's #2 and wants to keep it by not being nice. My baby too, but if he doesn't stop he's in a pen alone alone alone. I want to use him for EEs and OEs. He's sweet, but lately not as sweet as he was, so he won't let us just reach down and pick him up. I see any aggression like Clyde had and I doubt I'd take the time to work that much with him. He's as big as LD, he's pretty, but he should have been a cull. Was from lav AMs and he's maybe got a lav sheen here and there, but not anything like I've seen before. Still I think he's beautiful and as long as he stays just like he is or mellows out he stays. Otherwise I can't afford to feed mean and off standard.

Oh and yeah..........thunder storm??? Closest we got to that was a BBQ with ranchero music blasting and enough sprinkle to put splotches all over my car so bad I had to go wash it so I could see out of the windshield. Thing is I washed it yesterday evening. That's how dusty it is here. Gotta love black cars.
