Because it is a complex color, I would try to do it white the birds you have. If you want to move quicker I would get the biggest white male with good type that I could find and deal with the color later. You can do both at once, if you have the time and space. Just had a hen hatch out 9 Nankins today. I don't usually hatch birds this late, but I want them smaller, so I can't get much later than this....this is so late it is almost early. lol
Walt

Ok Walt that is about the funniest thing I've heard....THIS IS SO LATE IT IS ALMOST EARLY...sounds like a country song in the making

Ok so until someone tells us they are bored with this topic, I could use some extra learning Walt...WHITE really?, yikes what the heck will those babies look like... why not a brown? Do I have the room?, hmmm not really but since there is only one other breeder and then sandhill the hatchery, I really want to do the right thing to get this breed back on the map. So then what, I put the white male on half the girls? Then breed the chicks back to the other MF roo? I only have 6 pullets & 5 cockerels. Assuming I have 3 good roos in the end, how many do you think I should keep? 2? Maybe put the white roo on 2 girls and the MF roos on 4 girls...or is that silly, just keep one roo...? oh man Just don't have much room at the ranch for a bunch of little pens.

Then of course the ultimate question is where is this perfect white roo coming from?

And at what age should I get one and how old should he be? The ones I have are 3 1/2 - 5 1/2 months

AND DARN IT!!! those white leg ones I have in my layer pen have FABULOUS type, can I paint their legs?

I think I'm dizzy

Don't forget to throw in some info in the SPPRs oh and maybe Sumatras, I have black. Might as well also talk a little about FBCM and blue copper also. Let's seeeeeeeee. Oh what do I do with a little d'Uccle roo who hasn't been able to walk for a week. I think his leg is broken, but then again I don't see where. Just keeps throwing the leg out and can't walk and I want my little Edward better.

Maureen you are so sweet and thank you for such kind words of praise. I just like everyone else on this thread, love to spoil our babies. As far as pets go I've been blessed with really awesome dogs but never thought I would become so attached to my flocks. My layers are my favorites because I get to visit with them a few times a day. When I go to the ranch, again only 5 minutes from the house, but much of my time is spent on cleaning, feeding etc and I really don't take enough time just loving-them-up. I do however take time to study them. I'm trying really hard to learn as much as possible so i can do a good job in breeding my flocks. My porcupine rooster, Jake, I know is so grumpy, I have one broody and the other 3, well they are molting too as maureen saw the crazy amount of white feathers everywhere. So egg production is slim and who knows if Jake is doing his job. Heck he's looking so bad I think he's probably telling the girls that HE has a headache!

At any rate, fun afternoon with Maureen and letting babies go to their new home and it looks like we have 4-5 people/families that want to come out so I'll be PMing dates that could work... maybe a glass of wine and chicken viewing (although no wine at the ranch) or maybe a brunch - OOOO fun to do a breakfast...eggs could be the star! that is if my layers ever decide to lay again!

Silly girl, ok let's chat about your roo...what about a splint? too bad you are not closer, Dyann is a bird guru, she volunteers at Lindsey Museums hospital weekly (don't know if you guys knew that) she taught me how to be a surrogate chicken vet (along with my real chicken vet) At any rate, she can tell right away if somethings broken etc...I just don't have that knowledge yet. But I'm trying

OH i need her. I have no idea what happened. He is usually penned alone with one very small bantam hen. He never roosts, he curls up in a corner. He was fine one day when I was out cleaning up and then the next time I walked passed him he was limping. I checked him out and he started walking just fine. Next morning I went out and he was on his back kicking one leg. I've actuaaly had him in the house, so I can check on him as much as I can. He's not getting better. Eats and drinks fine, but he's starting to droop, but otherwise seems fine.

Where can I see a few pics of splints? I need him well and he looks so sad in here. So hard to see anything otherwise that could be wrong. All those dang feathers!

splints? I have no idea, I just thought of it, maybe you aren't suppose to splint, let's search

I assume you did a vent check for buggies and a foot check for bumblefoot or toes broken??

This looks like a really fun event this weekend in Oakland at Jack London Square. http://eatrealfest.com/event/Oakland/California/2011/make-backyard-farmers

The
Eat Real Fest, it sounds like there will be chickens. We were just at jack london square last weekend for the boat show and farmers market, sure is nice and of course you can also take the ferry from and to there.

I used to love the Square, but miss Jack London Village. Seems like it was built and then torn down in no time.

No signs of any other problem. No bumble foot and I had that problem a few years ago with a Polish hen. It was horrible and I didn't even notice it when I bought her.

I just don't know what to do for him. Poor little thing. He's so sweet and so cute, I just want him better. There is nothing other that feeders in that pen and a nest box. I have no idea what he could have done to it.
