Hi Karen,
I know ... and there are few and far REAL poultry classes offered by colleges. Don't know if UC Davis has poultry classes or not. Ditto for other community colleges in the Bay Area.

Weekend workshops are informative and meet ups are great, but this course, if there are enough students enrolled to make it happen, is pretty extensive and detailed.

I'll keep you posted on how I do ...

I think continuing education is great. There is so much to learn & even if it's review it keeps things fresh. It's a great way to get together & exchange information too. Other people ask questions that you may not think to ask but are glad to learn the news.
I hope you get enough peopel together to have the class.

Welcome Savuti! I lived in Pacifica for a while. We had an awesome view of the ocean, on the 3 days per year you could see it!

Chickens should do well there. You don't have to worry about them getting too hot or freezing. If you are in a really drippy zone, it would probably be good to have a run that is at least partially roofed, so the chickens will have a place dry out.

haven't introduced myself on there yet though, definitely want to get to know as many people as possible. This site and everyone on here are such a great resource. My wonderfully patient boyfriend is still a little unsure about the chickens, but he's not against them, and I'm sure once we have some he'll be in love

haha.

My boyfriend was a little unsure too! When he gave me the go ahead to get them I went out immediately and bought some (so he couldn't change his mind.) hahaha We had a bad first start (got a bad batch of chicks and all but one died) but we kept at it and are doing awesome now. My boyfriend is in love with them as I am!!

I wish I could go out and get chicks right away but I really want to have everything in place before I get them, I'm very much a planner, haha.

Thanks, I was planning on having a roofed run for the chickens, so hopefully that will help, they will also be in an area that gets a decent amount of sun so the coop/run can dry out after particularly damp nights if there's sun during the day. I'm very thankful that the weather is relatively mild the majority of the time, it's one reason I love living here.

It's better to plan.. I just don't know how to wait for anything!! LOL Would love to see pictures of your coop when it's done. Good luck building it! We had a ton of fun figuring it all out

Hello all, I am a newbie BYC member from the bay area. I just started raising my chicks 18 weeks ago and am looking forward to our first eggs! I, like everyone else here on BYC, am so thankful for the wealth of knowledge here on these boards and have spent countless hours reading through so many of your testimonies. Thank you to all who have contributed to this site!

Our first flock started with 7 and has now dwindled to 5 as I lost one baby silkie several weeks ago and my cute little frizzle turned out to be a roo. Luckily I was able to find him a good home. My husband and I have just completed our incubator as I am looking to hatch a few different types of specialty birds that can't be found at the local feed supply. Some that are on my list are Crested Polish, Silkies, Lavender Orpingtons, and French Wheaten Marans.

If any of you Bay Area BYC members know of any breeders with hatching eggs, please let me know!

I raise imported Orpingtons in Blue, Black and Splash... but not Lavenders. My girls are inbetween molting and brooding their own chicks right now so if you decide you want more colors of Orpington I might be able to help you out down the road.

We're in Oakland, I also raise Sumatras in Dun, Khaki and Black.

I have a friend who raises bantam Polish in many, many different colors. I can let her know that you're looking for eggs too.
