Baytril in chickens?

This may or may not make you feel better... The most I have heard of a chicken getting is 20mg/kg twice a day, but it's usually not more than 10mg/kg twice a day. If your liquid is clear, it's probably the 100mg/ml stuff, but if he took some pills, crushed them and made his own, there's no telling what strength it is, but by law it should say on the bottle.

That said, you average Rhode Island Red hen weighs about 2.9kg (6.4 pounds), so the very most it would get would be 58mg or .58ml of the 100mg/ml liquid twice a day. The more common dose would be half that.

I did read something once that said sometimes a massive single dose can be used, but I don't recall where I saw that. Good news is if your hen seems better after this dose it probably is a bacterial.

And to answer your question, no, I don't think she's gonna die, but she might get the runs, so make sure she has plenty of water.

Hope this helps

She's at 3 pounds, just about. And the bottle just says '20 ml' with no mg on it, but it's a small bottle and it's only got another .5 Ml in it, so it was 1.5 ml. So I'm assuming the 20 is for the mgs?
It says 20ml but there's only .5ml left?

Yup. See, that's why I'm confused. I'm no stranger to meds but this doesn't have 'Mg' on it. Just 'ML'. although it also says it's 'injectable'. However, he did tell me to put it in her mouth. (( "Just open her beak and squirt it in.)) and he did take her weight.

To be honest, I'm starting to doubt his abilities..

An update on the hen is she's now getting some clear discharge from her nose. Is this good because the gunks coming out of her body? Or is it just something to be expected?

Okay... if it says injectable it probably *is* the 10% (100mg/ml). Is it possible that the bottle says 2.0ml? Did he say how many days to give it? It sounds like the dose he wanted you to give was ~5mg/kg (.05ml), and you gave 10x that.

FYI, Baytril works very fast, like starts in 20 minutes according to something I read. As for the fluid coming out of her nose, I can't say if that's a good sign or not.

It doesn't say how many days. Just says give twice daily. :T

Update on miss chick, her rattles nearly gone. I gave her the CORRECT dosage this morning.. Much easier than the .5 dosage.

Aand.. No, theres no decimal point. Could be a typo? He might've put the extra stuff so I could treat my other chickens if they got sick.

Okay, so Miss Cluckles' rattling has REALLY gone away. I think the Baytril worked. Which means it's Bacterial?

So how should I respond to this? It's not MS/MG (I think) so it's just... caused byyy?

I don't have any experience with respiratory diseases in poultry, so I can't comment on it other than to say what you already know, and that's that there must be a bacterial component to whatever she has.

So with this does this mean she's now a carrier of some unknown bacterial disease and that I should never sell a chicken from my flock? I had hoped one day to sell a few EE chicks in the far off future. But I'd never want to infect someone elses flock. Even if it's just a small rattle and a runny nose.

Your best bet would be to have some blood drawn and nasal swabs sent off to a lab. Where do you live, I'll see what labs are available to you.
