Yeah, don’t worry. He will be back. Rat snakes don’t get a second chance at my coop. And yes, I know they’re helpful controlling the rodent population. I try to collect the egg’s early and often when it’s hot. I feel like the population is not in danger so I remove any snake who finds my coop.

"when it's hot" . So the snakes are more apt to snuggle in when it's an egg sauna? I know reptiles love heat.

The person who I got some of my hens from had a snake just cruise on through their coop and the chickens just sat there and watched it. My old rooster beat up a snake once but my cockerel is only 8 weeks so hopefully snakes won’t come until he’s older!
