I would charge for the birds as well as the cost of the eggs and the cost of incubating them. Also charge for replacement eggs if you wish to do it again. I would also charge any damage that the dog did to your coop.

Oh and dont forget mental stress is worth more than you think.

That is one of the most ridiculous things I've read in a long time. Sorry, but its AN ANIMAL. The only rights they have is to be fed on time and treated HUMANELY.

Ditto to that one... and I love my dog.

I think a whole weeks paycheck for the birds sounds fair... whether it's $500 or $1500.

I agree 100%

I am so sorry to hear about your chickens. It is absolutely heart breaking. I must tell you, i know it has been several days and I just saw this, but my hen had a section on her neck ripped out (skin and feathers) about 2 inches wide and about 4 inches up her neck a little over a month ago (around a month ago) and today she is a lot better. She also had a big chunk taken out of the top of her head. It was horrid looking, all you could see was the fascia of the muscles underneath. All the skin miraculously grew back and now even feathers are coming out in a few places. I kept her in a small chicken tractor in my garage on newspapers so she wouldn't get dirt in her wound, cleaned her up with sterile saline once a day (or everyother day time permitting) for about a week, and put EMT gel on her wound (From Tractor Supply). I just spread it all over it and on to the edge where her skin started. For the first week or two I put it on once in the morning and once in the evening (its somewhat stinky and very sticky). Then I put it on once a day after that. It forms a hard perimeter around the wound, looks icky but it works. I thought I would have to clean it off somehow but it eventually falls off on its own. After a week, I started putting it on once a day. Then after two weeks put it on every day to every other day. No covering it up or anything. I was really surprised. I totally thought she was a gonner with that large of a wound.

Good luck. I hope I am not too late.

I forget what book I read this in, but the author recommended compensation of $50 per chicken. He said he's successfully gotten that amount in small claims court.

It's not what you paid, it's what they're worth. You didn't just pay for the chicken, you paid for all the care and feeding that went into them. You are also entitled to be compensated for any meat or eggs from the flock. Plus, there's a difference between having one bird killed and half the flock killed.

I think this guy owes you $900, or you take him to court.

I would also call animal control and report this. Sadly, once a dog kills, it's bound to kill again, and these people are clearly not resposible pet owners.

That all being said, I guess we just can't range our chickens unless our yards are securely fenced. It's a shame, because my birds love to run around the yard, but I did just pull a big huge cat out of my coop because I left the door open. I have no desire to completely fence in my yard, so this is what I have to deal with.

I feel sorry for the dog. It doesn't know any better, and it's not the dog's fault some jerk is it's owner. They don't do the dogs any favors by letting them roam free to be attacked or hit by a car.

If you cannot shoot the dogs, then atleast catch them, call the shelter a ways from your town and ask if you can drop these dogs off, they were loose in a deserted area chasing rabbits and tore one apart. No one can pin anything on you at that point, drop off and tie to door knob of spca remember to take their collars off. Perhaps these dogs will find a better home.
