Bedding and cleaning

Past the first day, once they know food, paper towels aren't good for their legs. They need a softer surface.

Kiln dried pine shavings will be deodorant and much cleaner and dryer. You want to buy them in big bales. One bale will last many cleanings. I use them 3-4 inches deep, they keep them stirred so they aren't laying in poop if they are deep. Chicks are pretty dry as long as their water is elevated.

Also, how big is your tote? I have a huge one and my recent 15 outgrew it quickly. Went to an appliance box.

There was shelf liner under the paper towels, so it wasn't just the towels.

I put the pine shavings down tonight, but they are angry, lol. After an hour of complaining, I couldn't take the noise and put a couple sheets of paper over the pine and immediately a handful flocked to it. It's not completely covering the pine, but enough to give them some islands away from the "hot lava" and about half the shouting has settled down.

So you completely empty the pine shavings daily?

I got weeks per change. Big tote then big box.
