Before or After

Did you find BYC before or after you got chickens?

I got them before.

What possessed you to put chickens in your backyard?

The chickens were a consolation proze for buying our new house, they were there and we got to keep them free of charge

I found the BYC before I got my chickens. I wanted to do a lot of research to make sure I understood what I needed to know before I got into. Of course as we've all found out, it's a continuous leanring experience.

Unless, of course, you happen to be Miss Prissy or Nifty Chicken and already know everything there is to know about chickens!

I found BYC a couple of months after I got my chickens.

My husband used to have chickens, and missed them. (I was scared of them.) But, he talked me into it because I really wanted to have fresh eggs for the family. Now, I love the chickens more than he does!!

Before I got my own chickens. I found it on google when I searched for chick hatcheries while looking into some hatching eggs for my sister in law. I joined since I was hatching her some eggs and 5 months later, got my own flock.

Actually, finding BYC. I never knew that even in most towns, you can have a hen or two. Heck, New York City allows chickens. I was set on getting a few when we lived in town, but we up and moved within a month of finding this farmhouse. I'm glad we moved because I'd never have been able to settle for just 2-3 chickens... I've got 22 and I can't wait to add more this spring

Before, in fact BYC and especially the forum were a big push for me to get chicks in the fall rather than waiting for the spring. They turn 6 weeks today!

Being a desk-jockey (aka Software Engineer) and having grown up in the city, but now living on agriculturally zoned 1.3 acre lot, I have decided that paying ~$6/lb from the local organic farmer or eating that 'tasty' store bought chicken isn't for me (well, us, there is a lovely wife in the picture) and it's time to do something about it.

Initially we almost settled for rabbits, as they are quieter, but went for the gusto. So now we have chickens, a pair of guineas, a pair of button quail (and their eggies in the incubator) + 30 bobwhite eggs!

I found BYC before I had chickens , I like to research and learn as much about what I am getting myself into before I do it. I am a 'lil' bit of a perfectionist, so I like to do things right (especially a living thing). ain't like cookin' a lil this a lil that

. Now... they mean much more to me than just eggs, I cry when I can't find my silkies and I know with only 1 girl there ain't gonna be much eggs from her, but they are so sweet and friendly(of course my DH says there only like that because they can't see nothing

I don't have my birds yet. Well, that's not true. I had 25 broilers but I didn't HAVE them...they lived on a local farm and the person I went in on them with had her 4-H'er take care of them until...uh...processing. I found BYC while obsessing about learning how to keep a laying flock.

Eggs, for one...relates to a desire to be more self-sufficient. I also want a veggie garden for that reason and chicken poo will be a soil amendment. For another, now I HAVE a yard where I can have them...even though I live in a right-to-farm county - that doesn't extend to the county seat where I lived before this. And lastly, our little broilers were so much very' FUN (and I have cable).
