Beginner's Hatch-A-Long

um some red comet's and i think americaunas will be my first go. I would like to do some cochins and blue and lavender orpingtons one day but for now i'll start with these.

I agree, this will be the second time I will incubate eggs. The first time, the eggs were given to us, the incubator borrowed, we set it up, threw in the eggs and then started reading the directions! I didn't know it was so complicated and I bet we had about 70% hatch, sometimes the less you know, the better.

This is my first time so I just did crosses. But I hope to do some pure breeds next time!

Our temps over here are fluctuating a lot and it's making me nervous. I guess it's the price I'm paying for having a DIY incubator. We'll candle in a few days to see if anything is happening, but until then, we'll be crossing fingers and praying. LOL

Seems like that is a common problem. I wonder if it is from heat generated from embryos forming, beginning to give off heat and the thermostats can't adjust fast enough to compensate. I might be completely off base but that's my guess. I will be putting mine in the basement so hopefully I can keep my hands off of them if they are out of sight!

Yea, it's wierd-one day my temperature is perfect, then the next day I'm 1.5 degrees high!

I picked up my incubator this afternoon. I did not go with the little giant after reading all the comments, I just don't have the time to fiddle with it all day long. I went with the Farm Innovators pro series. Hoping it is worth the extra money. I plan to set it up tomorrow when I get home from work and am expecting eggs about the 2nd.

I bought an incubator earlier this month and put my first set of eggs in April 20th. After my first candle, all were fertile & one I thought was iffy. I checked it again tonight and it's definitely a goner - wide blood ring. That leaves me with 11 Delaware, 1 Dominique, and 1 Australorp. Good luck to everyone!

Yea, the Little Giant is okay, but not easy to control. I had some fairly large temperature swings.
