Scripture on taking oaths

Matthew 5: 34-37
  • But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:
  • Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
  • Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
  • But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.
James 5:12
But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and [your] nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.
That is why devout Quakers, such as my parents were, when they have to appear in court, say, "I do so affirm to tell the truth" or "I can agree to tell the whole truth". They will not swear to anything, especially on the Bible. They consider that a sin, or sacrilege .

Yes it is a sin to swear. We don't say affirm. When my husband was in court once he stated he would share the verse above Matthew 5 with him and why he doesn't swear. The judge laughed at him, and said he didn't have to.

I think most courts today accept people not swearing, I think you can just "affirm" or even agree to tell the truth.

For the record, I am a Seventh-day Adventist although I was raised Catholic. But I don't think what I am is important. What is important is who Jesus is, and what He has done, is doing, and will do for us.

He is the eternal Son of the living God, Who took human flesh and became Emmanuel, "God with us." He lived a sinless life among us, then took our sins upon Himself and bore them in His body on the cross, where they separated Him from the Father and crushed the life from Him. As prophecy foretold, He was buried and rose again the third day, and ascended to heaven, where He lives to make intercession for us, to forgive us from our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). He sent His Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Godhead, to minister to us in His absence, giving us a new heart to enable us to keep His Word and live in obedience to Him, because we love Him (John 14:15). A day is coming when He will return to gather His elect, those who have accepted His sacrifice in their place by faith, and take them to be with Him in His Father's house (John 14:3) and "so shall we ever be with the Lord" (1 Thess. 4:17).

It is most important who the LORD JESUS is and His Word and His commandments, and doctrine and to believe in Him!!!! Not man made doctrine or ways, but His ways and who He truly is!! He gave us many warnings in the Bible about wolves and false prophets and teachings! We must study His Word!!
