Bento Box Fever!

Hi, everyone! I'm Japanese(I live in United States now but, I was born in Japan and grew up there.) and I used to take Obento to my school lunch, my office lunch almosst everyday. My mom used to make them for me every morning. And now, I'm making Obento for my husband and my daugher(soon my son too!). My daugher has a Hello Kitty Obento box from Japan.(My mom sent it to her for her Birth day.) You can put whatever you want in their Obento box as long as they love them. Because this is for fun for yourself and for your loving one, and hard to find Japanese food around here in NE PA. About spam musubi, I heard this food is very famous in Hawaii, but you hardly see it in Japan. Anyway, I'm sooooo happy to see everyone here is interested in Japanese Obento and make it for your loving one. (I'm sorry if you hard to understand my english since I'm Japanese. English is my second language.)

Welcome!!! Your English is very easy to understand. Don't worry at all! We're just happy that you are here.

Well, just knock me up the side o my head. I'm so sorry. I knew that, I've followed this thread from the beginning and wishing so much that I actually needed a Bento box. I had been reading one of MP's recipes and then typed the wrong name. Please forgive.....

Anyway, now that I've made a total fool of myself, yet again, what's in today's box???

DH didn't work tonight or yesterday, so nothing is in the box. LOL

His next work day will be grilled cheese on homemade bread, homemade apple sauce, chips and some other goodies.

My daughter has once again requested, "Mommy, can I PLEASE have a bento for my lunch Monday?"

Poor baby.

Hopefully I'll be back on the "good mommy" track by Monday!

Anyone know where there is a good sushi kit with the mat and everything? The kid is requesting maki rolls, and I haven't ever made them at home! I do have all the ingredients--the rice, nori, pickled ginger, etc.

I have a kit called "Sushi Deluxe Book and Kit" it has: 5 piece rice mold, 9"X12" bamboo rolling mat, 2 ceramic sauce dipping plates, Sushi Made Easy all-in-one color instruction and Recipe Book, 4 pairs of black and gold laquer chopsticks, and 4 Ebony-stone chopstick rests.

eta: if you are back on the "good mommy" list by Monday- you earn a thousand gold stars!!!!!! I have been off the list for quite some time.

So...you knowthat O. Henry story , the very touching one, in which the poor young couple sacrifice in order to give each other meaningful Christmas gifts? He sells his watch to buy her a comb for her hair; meanwhile she sells her long hair to buy him a chain/fob for his watch. Right.

Well, finances being tight this year, my husband and I agreed not to buy for each other at Christmas. Howevahhhh, I was buying Zojirushi Mr. Bento for my sister, and a Mini Bento for my daughter, and Amazon was running a promotion where you purchase three of anything in a certain category, and you get the 4th for free. So I set up a purchase that gave me a free Mr. Bento (which, at around $50 a pop, was a good deal), and wrapped that for Hubs. Included was an implied promise to fill the Mr. Bento with yummy lunches for him.

So, he sees this gift from me, panics, and buys me a couple of books to wrap (books are easy to guess when they're wrapped) and put under the tree for me.

My point is, the vibe of my little Christmas gift story wasn't quite like that of the O. Henry story: I gave him a fancy lunch-jar so that I could pack him good lunches I'd cooked; meanwhile, he gave me a Paula Deen COOKBOOK. You know, so that I could cook him food.

Hmmmmm....
