Bento Box Fever!

We'll find out in about 15 minutes. I could see that happening to him. His preK/K school had a lot of kids who ate interesting stuff and there was no cafeteria. Public school is very different and he says most kids eat the cafeteria food.
Just thinking about salisbury steak makes me want to gag! My mother used to buy the frozen kind. ew!

Kids! Did you try the "they're just jealous" line?

Just keep trying. Perhaps there was too much of a new thing all at once. Try putting a few standby type foods in there along with the new stuff and just see what happens from there.

I'm a firm believer in never holding back anything from kids, as long as it's safe for them to eat. My folks had the same philosophy with us and none of us kids are fussy, nor are my children. Just two weeks ago, we went out for Korean BBQ. Not only do my kids eat just about anything, but even I was surprised to see my 13 year old pick up a baby octopus, put it on the grill, and give it a try. He was willing to try something new, something I'd never served in my home for precisely the reason that I keep introducing new things and keep reintroducing things that are initially rejected. I was so proud of him for giving it a try, completely unprompted by an adult. See, new things aren't scary to him any longer.

So, while the other kids may have rejected the food initially, it may just be because it's unfamiliar. You know, the old "Ewwww. Gross." "What is it?" rejected before tasted routine.

I bet that if you keep on doing what you're doing, not only will your son love it, but you might just get a few telephone calls from other mothers wanting to know where you got the really cool lunchbox!

Mine ate two out of three big onigiri I packed. Yay!!! He said one girl said, "ew I hate sushi!" He just said it wasn't sushi and kept eating. AND the Totoro dvd came from Netflix and he LOVED it. Can't wait for his bento box to come. He is rolling left over rice in lettuce leaves for some reason. He doesn't like lettuce anymore than he likes nori. Oh well, it's a surprise he says.

I'm a happy mommy!

Backyard Buddies: Thanks for the morale boost!!

I needed it. He has already asked me twice tonight if he can have a bento again tomorrow. I am pretty sure he gets it. I think what irked me the most was the waste of perfectly good food. In my family (and I bet in a lot of folk's familys on here) wasting food is a HUGE no no. If it isnt going into our tummies, then its going into the dog's or the chicken's tummies. Oh my gosh, Korean BBQ sounds soooooo gooooooood!!!! I have'nt had it in ages. I am also a big fondue person. Hooray for interactive food and for kids who try all kinds of things, like octopus

eta: Oh yha, and I totally did the "they are just jealous" line. Its one of those great multipurpose mom lines, isnt it?

He didn't do much with it because the rice was cold and wouldn't stick well. So we added most of the lettuce to the salad we had with dinner and the dogs got a little left over, much handled rice.
He absolutely adored the Totoro dvd and is dying to get his hands on that bento box!

Quite welcome! I'm glad that he hasn't given up on the idea. I think that if you keep at it, he'll really appreciate all your effort.

Yes, we're very much the same way about not wasting food. There are waaaay too many starving people in the world for that!

The Korean BBQ was yummy and I agree that interactive food is great fun! We also do fondue here (I'm 1/4 Swiss, so how could I not??!!) and any other interactive food we can get our hands on. I'm also teaching my kids to cook. My mother is the daughter and granddaughter of caterers and never learned to cook herself since she got to eat leftover Hollywood party food for all of her meals.

So, I joke that I learned to cook out of self-defense, but swore that I'd be sure that my kids not only appreciated good food but learned to make it as well. They love saying "Hey Mom, you know what we need to cook . . . . .?" I'm always game. We look up recipes and they get to help try to make it. Korean BBQ, Mongolian BBQ, and Fondue are right up that alley. Empower 'em is my motto!

OK, I'm drifting over to the dark side here...
