I have been partially forgiven. (Sniff)

Guess who showed up at my door this morning? My beautiful, injured, SLO showed up at my door.

Plus, I think I know what happened.

About three months ago I bought a poodle puppy from a breeder. Yesterday while I was doing some outdoor chores I remember catching out of the side of my eye the puppy chasing one of the chickens. I think that is what happened as her injuries are at the tail and lower back just above the tail.

She hid under the porch all day/night and came out this morning.

I have bandaged her wounds. A fed her… she is eating well. I gave her a baby aspirin.

She appears to be doing well; she has eaten most of a large scrambled egg, but so far has not been interested in water. Regardless, I have learned a very very very very big lesson.
Luckily for you that your puppy is still a puppy. Train the puppy! And it seems like she may have just been “playing” with the chickens. It is still sad no matter how you look at it.

Edit: maybe she wasn’t playing with them, I wrote this before seeing the pictures.

My dog got ahold of all 12 ducks and 6, 3week old chicks. She however was NOT playing with them and we had a hard time training her before we even got chickens. So we did EVERYTHING we could to keep her away. But she was determined. So even if you train your puppy, you may still want to keep your guard up and take precautions.

I’m sorry for the losses you have suffered. We ALL make mistakes and we will ALL do something wrong. No one is perfect. All that can be done is live and learn. I myself had to learn this hard lesson. And my heart breaks everyday. More because my dog did it. And not a random predator.

I hope your chicken recovers and I hope the puppy will learn!

Mary,

Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate your suggestions. At the moment I have turned the chickens out in the front yard for two reasons: they have an excellent hiding place (under the deck.)

Secondly, I can watch them very closely. And call them if I can’t see all of them.

Puppy, aka Liliane (lily for short.) is now not allowed out of the house when the chickens are free ranging UNLESS she is on her leash. After the chickens are put up, she will be allowed to “free range” too.

Training for puppy is continual… leash should solve the problem.

When I re-dress Pumpkin’s wound, I’ll take a picture. Currently slathering with neosporin.

Thank you very much for your help. I was feeling pretty low…

Picture of wounds. Again, slathered with neosporin and redressed.

Thank the Lord I broke my leg and had surgery (two months ago.). Still healing, but I have sterile dressings and gauze. She managed to escape from her hospital bed while I was doing errands, so she is still pretty feisty. Pooped a huge broody poop…

Any suggestions for care are welcome, including scolding.
If it was me I would just put her out of her misery. I can't stand to see anything suffer. She's lost a considerable amount of flesh & blood & lost all the feathers off her back.Whats her belly and thighs look like?

That doesn't look like a wound caused by a pup sorry.

And I accidentally killed one of my chickens earlier this year. She has sour crop, and she aspirated when I picked her up and caused her to vomit. It's a terrible feeling. All we can do is learn and do better next time. But it has taken me months to not cry when I think about my poor Jess and how she died. I am terribly sorry for your loss, and for the way I know you must be feeling.

A friend recently told me a saying that I really like for these hard times. It went something like, "Pain is the sandpaper of life."
