Best Breeds to Sell???

Quote:
Ask around, I would check out if there is a 4-H poultry club around and ask around or if you know someone with chickens ask which is there favorite.
The way I know is many of my family has chickens.

Dominiques (or Barred Rocks, nobody local really knows the difference) seem like they are always popular around here. Everybody wants those stripedy chickens that their grandma used to have......
What is popular probably depends the most on your location. Nobody wants white chickens here, so Leghorns are out.

How do I figure out what the favorite is around here?

When the feedstore has chicks, go see which ones the old ladies are fighting over

I'm trying to establish a good flock of Barred hens to go with my RIR roo so I can sell pullets. Seems like nobody wants to buy straight run.

Like Joe17 said, ask at your local feed stores. They know most of the people who raise chickens in your area, and most of us like to brag on our chickens! We have a local Co-Op that is pretty good, and a TSC which is not so good on local breeders, but worth a try. Also check your local newspapers classified section to see what is listed for sale there. If you have a flea market / auction / trade day that allows livestock, go look around and see what folks are buying.

We have "Ripley First Monday Trade Days" about 40 miles from me. One of the oldest in the south. They have a lot of poultry there, so we go every now and then and see what customers are carrying in cages. That means they are selling. It doesn't really help looking at what is for sale, it's what is acually selling that counts.

Also, run a search on BYC with your state / county / city as a keyword, might get some ideas there too.

But we still just raise what we personally like. I just like to know what others are doing.

Hope that helps

I went a couple of weeks ago to see some "Wonderful Dominiques, show stock really" for sale at the next town over. I din't see a single Dominique, but she sure was covered up with scraggly looking barred rocks. She told me they were great dominiques, I just smiled and thought "Compared to what?

oh well

Go to the APA website and see their list of "Master breeders" and "Master Exibitors" they have to meet certain criteria to get those titles and they wouldn't get the title without winning alot against 100 or more of the same breed in a show. SO they are GOOD!

You already have been given excellent advice, raise what you like, buy the best breeding stock you can find. With quality birds you will sell your stock. For me which probably won't fit you, is:

1. Light Brahma's
2. Delawares
3. Plymouth Rocks
4. Buff Orp's
5. Dark Cornish

If you go the silkie route, join the american silkie bantam club. They have a state by state list of breeders there. Here are some of the better breeders of silkies that I know of. Amy Piehl, Bobbi Porto, Deb Steinburg, George M., Premier Silkies, Brenda G., Sundown Silkies, Poulets de Cajun, and Kelar. You can google their names and they will show up with their websites.

**These are just the breeders I could think of off hand. I know there are many more breeders out there.

I AGREE with everyone who says raise what you like. For most of us, this still leaves the door wide open to many different breeds of chicken

I DISAGREE with the idea that you should sell what the local feed stores sell.. . . We have 4 local feed stores. Almost all sell EE's. I have a few EE's, but this would not be the breed I try to sell necause I fell that the feed store already has that breed covered. I do watch what is moving and what is not . . . . I don't try to sell anything that the feed stores are selling - - -

if it sells real good at the feed store - -- then I competing with them and they have already flooded the market

if it does not sell well at the feed store - -- then it probably won't sell good for me either

I try to sell what I LIKE and is not carried at the feed stores.
