Best Brown Egg Layers for me...

1. Black Sex link... she hardly ever misses. Maybe misses a day once every two months! (Large brown egg)
2. Cinnamon Queen... misses once every two weeks (Medium brown egg)
3. Barred Rock... misses once a week. (large brown egg with a tint of lavender)
4. Delaware... misses once a week (large Dark brown egg)
5. Speckled Sussex... she's really in the laying mode right now. misses once or twice a week. (medium brown egg with a tint of pink)
6. Salmon Faverolle... she just started laying very regularly... maybe she goes through cycles. (small dark brown egg)

We have RIR'S and black jersey giants and the silver laced wyondotts and while none of my birds are skittish they are all calm . but the only one that is pet friendly is a RIR and she is like a light red kinda orangeish red while all my other RIR'S are deep red the lighter one is soooo friendly she is my favorite I can pet her and love on her and she is ok with it and does not freak while the others like the wyondott's I can hand feed them but no petting nor the jersey's they are all good and calm tho . I had some buffs last summer and because of feed conservation they were culled but they were sooo friendly as well. I think the only one's we have ever had that were skittish was our americana's we had last summer. which went in the freezer also and I do not recomend that the birds were so small they looked big but under the fluff buff's and americana's are not eatin birds!

I have three homegrown black sex links and they are laying machines. They lay nice BIG brown eggs, so big in fact that it's often hard to close the egg cartons

They've been laying close to a year and the eggs are still huge.

The chcikens that will lay the most will be you sex links hybreds. BUT you will have to replace them every 2 years or sooner from a hatchery. Most do not live out a year as they will have laying problems. I you want a breed go with Rocks, just read my blog on my chickens in my sig. If you want a mixed flock then go with both sex links and Rocks and Sussex and any other that catches your eye. NH and RIR are great but can have temperment problems. That how sex links came around to try to keep egg production up and improve temperment, but they do not bred true.

We got some RIRs at TSC last year. They lay regularly, and their eggs are jumbo. We can't fill an egg carton with their eggs because they are so HUGE! They are also very friendly and curious, especially when their is food involved. I vote for RIRs!

Our RIR eggs are the brown eggs in the back of the carton (one has a feather on it - it was so cute I couldn't take it off!), compared to the Large store-bought eggs.

I also would vote Rhode Island Red, Production Red or Black or Red Sex-Link. (By the way, you asked about Brown Leghorn, but that will lay a white egg, not brown.)

Our RIR lays every single day. Sometimes in emergencies when we have to lock the coop up and some of the birds are stuck outside for the night, the RIR will lay two eggs the next day in their favorite nest box. Our brahmas lay about 5 eggs out of a week and some of them are very large eggs. In terms of taste the Brahmas have the best taste. The RIR have good color but our brahmas can get almost red.
