Thanks guys!! Well, I went and bought 31 Golden Comets
I am going to go back to the feed store tomorrow and buy some black sexlinks!! I plan on growing them out and selling all that I don't want. I will be selling eggs to pay for their feed. Of course, we will be eating them, too!
One more thing--my golden comets look a lot like buff orp chicks. I thought they were supposed to be more reddish. Anybody know?
I have a Golden Comet and I can say she was the first one to lay, next was my RIR's. We raised them all from chicks. My BO was next and she was the only one to lay steady through the winter and to go broody. We raised them all from chicks that we bought locally.
I vote for Barred Rocks (even though I've never had any other kind) My girls lay pretty much every day and maybe skip one day a week. They started laying when there were 21 weeks old and out of 18 hens I get 16 eggs a day.

Congrats texaschickmama! You will love your birds, and they'll be great layers for you. A lot of the red sex-links resemble buff orps as chicks, but you'll see differences as they get their adult feathering.
Okay, now I have 5 black sexlinks, 31 golden comets, 1 buff sexlink (BR roo with a buff orp hen), and 4 New Hampshire reds. Of these, what do you think is the best?
My vote is for the RIR. I get a beautiful, big, perfect egg from Ruby Red every day. If you spend some time with them when they're little, they can be very docile. Mine follows me around the yard looking for a treat or two
FOR LAYING PURPOSE?? Most definate my vote goes with the Golden Comet (a.k.a. red star, buff comet, etc.)
The girls I had were over a year and out of seven hens I had AT LEAST 6 eggs per day.
Even in winter I got a minnimum of 5 eggs per day.
I have R.I.Reds, Buff Orphs., Barred rocks, Black Australorps, Amerucanas, White Rocks, and new babies said to be Auracanas.
The Comets are docile and very nice.... most of all AWESOME EGG LAYERS!
