Best brown egg layer...

gold comets, they are very people friendly and lay extra large to jumbo size eggs and hardly ever miss a day,one of my gold comets laid an egg that on postal scales weighted 4.6 ounces,,that is huge,,,but as far processing ,they have very little meat and wouldn't be worthwhile to butcher

I am also in texas and I love my production reds. They tolerated the terrible heat this summer well and their eggs are big and many beautiful shades of brown.I find them to be very docile and friendly.

My New Hampshire and Sexlinks do the best for me. And IMO the New Hampshire has a wonderful personality! Just went and bought 9 more NH chicks this weekend!

Texas chickmama,

Give us the report.....How did it work out? Which one's are the best in your opinion?

Thanks, Dave

For temperament and looks, I love my NH Reds. They also lay beautiful brown eggs pretty much every day. The roosters are handsome too.

But we don't have extreme heat. I don't know how well they do in heat.

I have 2 Red Stars (red sexlinks) from McMurray, Tikka and Tandoori. They started laying right around 20 weeks and lay virtually every day (in over a month they've each taken only a day or two off). Within a week or two their eggs were the size of XL store bought eggs, and they're a gorgeous dark brown color. Never had a weird egg or double yolker from those two, either. They are very friendly towards humans, and pretty high up on the pecking order - I have seen them pick on lower ranking chickens but not excessively.

I have 8 RIR's that are 27 weeks old they are laying everyday I avarage 7-8 eggs a day eggs are good size. They are pretty friendly now that they are laying. Not real good with the younger chicks have a tendency to chase them. but we are working on that

I have a couple of RSL that lay pretty much every day. One lays a double yolker about once a week. I have a BR that's really consistent. She lays for four days, then takes the fifth off.
