They get some out or it falls out of beaks or something. They can't get their feet in and the center of the hole is 5" from the bottom of the container. The chickens can reach to the bottom to get the food. Just keep the hole about chest height. I have some on the floor, cinder blocks, bed risers, and hanging. Thanks for the review! They never show pictures of these ports from the front so you can see how the edge/lip is, so I always hesitate to buy them. My old pipe feeder had a deep neck and a lip and my Wyandottes STILL stuck their head way in and scraped food out and then kicked it around! Brats![]()
To train them, just put food in from the front of it to let it spill out a little and so they can see it. They will follow the food into the port and learn to eat out of it. I use their DIY chick feeders too so they are raised with the same concept from about 1 week old. I raise the feeders as they grow with 2x4 and 4x4 blocks of wood, and pavers.
Also, because I hate waste, sometimes I put an empty feed bag under the container so anything that falls out is on there and someone will clean it up.
