Best Snacks?

Hello there everyone,
I have two chickens named Matilda Jane, And Margalo Jane.They are both Ameraucanas'.
I was wondering what is the best Snacks and food? They are both six months. Presently we are feeding them chick crumble food from a local grain company. I am just wanting see what your opinions are on the best food and snacks. We want to give them a Healthy Diet. I also want to treat them to something they really savor.

At 6 months old I think it's safe to say they've outgrown their chick crumble. You could switch over to a layer crumble or pellet any time now. Though there are some people who feed chick crumble to all ages as it generally has a higher protein amount. The problem is chick crumble has too little calcium for layers. Why some will do instead is offer oyster shell on the side for the layers to eat what ever amount they want.


As far as snacks go, as long as you're feeding them a balanced layer ration and or offering a calcium source on the side, they shouldn't need anything else. In fact anything else may throw the nutrition they're getting out of whack and could cause problems. If you feel you must feed them extra snacks, try not to feed more than 10% of their daily feed intake. Choose something high in protein, not corn, or any other grain. Black oil sunflower seeds have up to 22% protein with the added benefit of an oil that along with the high protein makes for good feathers and eggs. Another good choice are meal worms, again for the high protein content.

BTW, I can't tell much from the picture you posted of Matilda in the way of what breed she is, but I CAN tell you she is most definitely not an Ameraucana. From what I would guess, she is a mix of some sort, but probably has no Ameraucana in her. I see no evidence of muffs on her and her comb doesn't look right either. Sorry to break it to you.
