Hello!
So, my husband and I bought a batch of 8 chicks that were supposed to all be pullets, awhile back, to go along with the 5 chickens that we already had. We recently started finding out the sexes of the chickens when seeing them mate (not all of our males had long combs and waddles before they started mating). Long story short, there is one hen that is all of the rooster's favorite. She lost all of the feathers on her back within one day. Fast forward to now, we have rehomed 3 roosters and JUST found out we have another (which makes 2 now). The rooster that we are keeping has a limp from being hurt in a rooster fight when he lived at my neighbor's. He doesn't seem to hurt, but he doesn't walk well, therefore he's not really a bother to our hen. This other rooster has been mating her, and we are in the process of rehoming him. We found a huge gash under above her wing yesterday. We cleaned it with diluted hydrogen peroxide (half peroxide, half water), and then put Neosporne on it. She is separated from all of the flock, in a separate chicken pen but she can still see her flock.
My question is, do we need to keep cleaning the wound, or will it not close up? We just don't want her to get an infection. Do we need to keep applying neosporne, if so, how often? Is there anything else that needs to be done? She is eating, drinking, moving around, and seems to not be in any pain. How long should we keep her isolated before we bring her best female friend into the pen to keep her company?
