I woke up at 4 this morning thanks to the crowing of a rooster.(yup, one of mine) I got to thinkin. What determines gender if not chromosomes? Hormones? I wonder if what ever it is, lives in a group or colony. Maybe only the alpha male and female reproduce. My guess is if its an animal thats gender is determined after birth, the litter would be small, say only one or two offspring born. Since the litter is small, the female somehow is able to produce more estrogen or testostron in her milk. Thus "choosing" the gender of her offspring to the advantage of the group. Maybe the offspring are born with immature male AND female parts at birth and due to an increase in either hormone the mother chooses to produce, causes the male OR female parts to develope creating a male or female. Its either a highly sophisticated animal or one thats so weird it needs all the help it can get to survive. I can't wait to find out what it is, its been driving me nuts.
