Birchen Marans Thread

Pics
True...I was surprised by how well they were developed though...if I had known, I'd have pipped a small hole and helped them get their beaks out, at least...I have good results assisting once an external pip is seen and no progress made...I was just waiting for them to make the 1st move though.

I see there has been no action here since April but I thought I would post pics of my 2.5 week old Birchen Marans babies...courtesy of @lawatt I am guessing at sex. I know I will know for sure much later but these are my impressions and I thought maybe these pics and the subsequent ones I will post will maybe help people make guesses about their own birds.

.
They won't hold still and I just have my phone camera but for ID purposes
Left front is A
Left Right is B
Center back is C...for cockerel I think

These are A...I think cockerel at this point on this one too. I know it is early but it has quite a comb for such a young chick and the stance in the second picture is telling...hope I am wrong

This pic looks more pulletish....hey a girl can hope right??

Here is Chick B Who I hope to be a pullet

comb pretty flat and dark

nice wing development already

Here is chick C. Getting shots of this guy was like taking photos of a pin ball he wasn't fearful but did not want to do anything but get back to the brooder. flew off the chair and refused to hold still at all. Check out the stance but the comb is not as obvious as chick A so again ...just my guesses.

I have 10 day olds under a broody too. I will post pics of them when there are differences. Right now they are just fluff balls

The hen you got will be just fine. Like coppers the silver may not always show on the females. Don't mix him with any other color Marans.

Exactly. If you mix the silver and let's say copper, you will end up with a mess that will take generations to fix.
