Look like pullet to me.

yeah, you can use splash to lighten blues, and there is nothing wrong with that, as long as the color doesn't go too light. If you breed splash to blue, you usually will get mostly chicks that are lighter blue than the blue parent, which may or may not be a good thing. I like to use splashes to control the tone of blue because I do use blacks in the breeding of blues. I just keep a separate pen for the blacks, and occasionally will outcross a black into them when I am wanting to maintain the nice edging on the feathers, and like the splash to keep the blues from getting too dark. Its all a balance game.
Black is black. IF you are talking about solid black marans and not black coppers they should produce pure blacks when crossed to pure blacks even if the black bird is produced from a blue x blue mating. My blacks came from solid blues and when breeding my blacks together I get nothing but solid black because they are genetically black. Is it, or is it not a good idea to use the blacks from a blue breeding to produce more blacks ??? Are they truly " black" ?
Are you better off keeping the blacks from those breedings separate from the true black to black birds ???
Hope I'm clear on this![]()

I have some nice solid black cockerals growing out right now.. they were all practicing their crowing this morning and it was way too cute!!
I am sure looking forward to having a nice big flock of solid black Marans to admire, pick the best of the best, and breed on from that.
Thanks Donna,,,, that's was my train of thought. I was wondering if the the blacks would be some washed out and perhaps not breed the blackest black possible. This genetic stuff can get a bit complex. Maybe I'll just keep the black pullets in with the blue group or layer group, just be on the safer side of things. The Roos will leave either way.
Thanks for your input. Wonder what Don's take on this would be ? Thinking he might follow your statement.
I was wondering if someone could tell me if blue coppers can actually look black at hatching, and then feather out blue? I purchased a group of chicks that were almost 3 weeks old, and it appeared that there were 5 black copper, and 3 blue copper. That was 2 1/2 weeks ago. One of the "blacks" now appears to be feathering out blue, and was just wondering if that happened. The hatching came from a black copper rooster, and two splash copper hens and one black copper hen. Thanks.
Thanks for info about the black/blue. ByeSometimes Blue can be REALLY dark and appear Black. Sometimes it take a test mating to find out for sure.
BTW here are some Copper Thread - this is just for Solid Color BBS Marans.... I think![]()
