Black Copper Marans discussion thread

My first Copper Maran. I believe it to be a hen, and a good one I hope. What do you guys think?

Not red enough? Took this two days ago. One hen is peeping from behind the fluffy bottom of another as they were both roosting in the coop rathers

This is a male.

Why?

I would say due to early comb development and the amount of coppering this bird already has.

Start checking the base of his tail where it meets his back, underneath some of those feathers you'll probably find copper saddle feathers developing.

How old is your bird?

I've seen a lot of pullets and hens marked like that and my Davis girls have big combs. I don't see any coppering anywhere else, so to me it looks like a pullet.

My cockerels look way different then that even at a young age.

OK so I'm not an expert, but they are my favorites and who knows, I could be wrong.

I use a Dremel and go slowly, making sure to round them off on the ends so they're not at all pointy.

I just hold the leg, and with plyers, firmly grasp the spur at the base, & twist. They pop off. It leaves a smaller spur, that is a little bloody but fine. I don't put anything on it.
That bird looks like a hen to me....he doesn't say how old it is. Not young. Maybe 5 months old?
