Black Friday Shopping...Who's Going and what are you shopping for?

I read online that most major retailers were going to give the black friday discounts starting on Thanksgiving day. You don't have to stand in line, get out at the crack of dawn, etc. It also said that it would be comptetative so get your typing fingers ready.

I can't wait for Black Friday!!! Unfortunately the kids are all adults now and I don't need anything. But I still love to go! It is so much fun! I love to stand in line and talk to everyone. I love getting deals and saving money

Kohl's by 3 AM for a mixer for one DD followed by Joann's for a Cricut for the other!
The part I miss the most is giving blood. When I lived in Ohio it was tradition to stop by the community center on your way home from Black Friday Shopping an donate blood to the Red Cross. It's especially needed during the holiday season.

Please realize I am expressing my own opinion and do not mean to antagonize anyone on BYC. I simply do not understand the concept of Black Friday. I cannot imagine why we let ourselves be overrun by commercials and hype. With a year to shop, if we MUST shop, why throw ourselves into one frenetic day? To me, this "event" illustrates all that has diminished the holiday season for me in the past couple of decades--too much consumerism, everywhere. I'll stay home, decorate minimally, work some more on handcrafted gifts, and enjoy the fireside and holiday music. Peace to all, ~G

DD and I have been going the past 3-4 years.

We hate crowds of people but we go for one reason only. To get DH something!

So many years while she was growing up we spent a LOT of money on her Christmas presents. As she got older, she realized DH always got things he needed-clothes, new camo, shoes, etc -which is all he ever would ask for.

Money has been tight the past few years so that is why we started the Black Friday shopping. We love to pick up something special for him that he has wanted but would never buy for himself nor ask for. Last year, we stood in line for several hours to get him a camcorder. This year it will be either a laptop or a new hunting rifle.

Surprising DH with something is the only reason DD and I go. DH has always made sure that DD & I have everything we needed and almost everything we wanted. It is worth the wait in lines and the crowds just to see his face on Christmas

ETA: We also love our Mother/Daughter trip. Shopping, breakfast, and chitchat

Think of the wonderful concentration of flu and cold germs, plus who knows what else, in the store during Black Friday. Now, think of all the merchandise you are picking up that may have had 20 other hands on it in the last hour as people picked it up, fondled it, and put it down. wonder how many of those wiped their hand across their face (maybe nose) or scratched themselves shortly before.

In a normal shopping trip, stuff you pick up may have been minimally handled. The crowds are fewer and the stores less germy (though still not clean). Imagine Black Friday and the next couple of days.

Ewwww.

And, I'm no germaphobe...

Like calling it "the Event" makes it any less scary for us...LOL! Go Walmartians!!!!

Yes, 12:01am is when some sales start up, most of the electronics are at 5:00AM. "Big Ticket Items" will not be in the actual store, you will be given a ticket that you take to the register and pay.

Hate to be negative, but I avoid Black Friday like the plague! Maybe it's because I worked so many Black Fridays in retail for many years, and maybe it's because I hate shopping, or maybe it's because I hate crowds. I want nothing to do with it. My best friend and her mother plan for it all year. At midnight they head out on this crazy spending spree and spend hours and hours, like literally 12 hours straight shopping. I think it's crazy. I can find all kinds of bargains any time of year just by looking in the right places and finding things on sale. I seriously think the whole thing is insane, all the mobs, lines, etc. No thanks.

But have fun for those of you who are into it!
